Witcher 4 Release Window Confirmed For 2028

Witcher 4 will be released in 2028, according to the CD Projekt RED CEO.

Nowakowski Confirms The Window Directly

CD Projekt Red Joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski confirmed The Witcher 4’s release window in a video message posted to the official Witcher account on X ahead of Gamescom. After discussing the studio’s plans for the show and The Witcher 3’s upcoming expansion, Nowakowski turned to the question fans have been asking most.

“Now, I know you’re eager to learn when it’s coming. That’s the question we’re hearing from you all the time,” he said.

“So while we’re not showing The Witcher 4 at the event, and we’re not ready to share an exact date, I can tell you this: The Witcher 4 is targeting a 2028 release window. I know it’s a bit of a wait and you’d love to play it sooner, but let the team cook. It will be worth the wait.”

Nowakowski also gave a broader sense of the project’s scale and ambition. “Our team here at CD Projekt Red HQ is hard at work on a brand new saga, one with Ciri at the helm,” he said. “We have more than 500 incredibly talented developers working to create something truly special for you. The Witcher 4 features a huge and immersive open world, intense and action-packed gameplay, and a deep, impactful story that we hope will stay with you for a long time. Simply put, this is our biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date.“

Why It’s Missing From Gamescom

Despite the release window confirmation, The Witcher 4 itself won’t be shown at Gamescom this week, not on stage and not on the show floor. That spotlight instead goes to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s new expansion, Songs of the Past, which will be featured heavily during Opening Night Live and playable at CD Projekt Red’s booth throughout the show, running August 25 through 30.

Nowakowski teased that there could still be “a surprise or two” during the week’s livestreams, though nothing suggests The Witcher 4 itself is likely to be among them.

A Long Road Since Full Production Began

The 2028 target follows a development timeline CD Projekt Red has been tracking publicly for a while. The Witcher 4, internally codenamed Project Polaris, entered full-scale production in late 2024 after wrapping preproduction, with Nowakowski saying at the time the studio was “very pleased” with progress on the project.

The game is being built on Unreal Engine 5, marking CD Projekt Red’s move away from its proprietary REDengine used for the previous two Witcher games, and is set to kick off a new trilogy following Ciri as its lead. As with any multi-year target this far out, a 2028 window remains subject to change; CD Projekt Red’s own Cyberpunk 2077 launched years behind its original schedule, so there’s no guarantee this date holds exactly as stated. For now, though, it’s the clearest answer fans have gotten yet on when The Witcher 4 is actually coming.
