Story Highlights

  • Keywords Studios failed to develop a game using GenAI tools. It found that the tools were “unable to replace talent.”
  • The 2D title, dubbed “Project Ava,” was being developed using over 400 GenAI tools but could not be finished.
  • The study claims that the tools are better when used for assistance and cannot outright replace humans.

Keywords Studios, a massive figure in supporting the development of many popular titles, has conducted a study and tried to create a game using GenAI tools. As announced in the company’s latest fiscal report, the 2D video game, dubbed “Project Ava,” used over 400 various AIs in an attempt to automate game creation. However, the studio CEO Bertrand Bodson revealed that the tools were “unable to replace talent.

Whilst the project team started small, it identified over 400 tools, evaluating and utilizing those with the best potential. Despite this, we ultimately utilized bench resource from seven different game development studios as part of the project, as the tooling was unable to replace talent,” said the CEO.

The study was to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the AI tools. It attempted to find where their use could improve the game development processes.

The Study Found That Human Talent Is Irreplaceable In Game Development

The experiment yields results proving that video games cannot be sustained by AI development —at this point at least. The tools used by Keywords accelerated and simplified some processes but ultimately led to a dead end for Project Ava. It shows that human devs are far from being replaced by such tools. However, GenAI tools are powerful in the right hands when used for assistance.

The best results and quality needed can only be achieved by experts in their field utilizing GenAI as a new, powerful tool in their creative process.”
