PlayStation Showcase 2022 Supposedly Delayed, Says Insider

It was allegedly taking place on 20th October.

Annual game events by big cooperations in the gaming industry are an efficient way of unveiling the upcoming endeavors of game studios. Events like Nintendo Direct, Gamescom, and PlayStation Showcase are also highly anticipated by the community every year.

These events usually bring teasers, gameplay trailers, and insights about upcoming projects. A definite date for the forthcoming PlayStation Showcase has still not been announced and has continued to change with each rumor thus far. However, the event may have been delayed altogether, as elaborated by an insider.

Major Takeaway:

  • The upcoming PlayStation Showcase 2022 event has been delayed following the Microsoft-Blizzard purchase, as reported by an insider.
  • Sony apparently believes a showcase will add weight to M.S. arguments and was scrapped for the time being.
  • However, a prominent insider thinks the rumor is based on predictions, and no one has knowledge of when it’s taking place.

The anticipated PlayStation Showcase has supposedly been put-off due to the current CMA investigation into the significant Microsoft Activision acquisition. The upcoming event is rumored to have been delayed because Sony felt it would be consequential to Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

The Showcase, which was expected to incorporate several new exclusives and first-party I.P.s as part of the event, will not be taking place this month as initial rumors had anticipated. The news comes from a well-renowned PlayStation industry insider, Millie A, who had initially reported that the event would be held on October 20th.

The tweet elaborates that “Sony believes a showcase will add weight to [Microsoft’s] arguments” because of the fact Sony has “exclusive titles and first party I.P.’ locked in'” and they are slated to make an appearance during the Showcase.

Millie A also added that the initial official announcement was planned for October 11th and the event for the 20th. However, Sony has pushed back this date internally and is “holding firm for now.” The PlayStation Showcase was also to include a Silent Hill reveal and the unveiling of Hideo Kojima‘s secret project.

However, another prominent insider, Tom Henderson, has also commented on the situation. According to Henderson, no insider knows the internal date of the PlayStation Showcase event, and the rumors are mere predictions based on “past shows, upcoming events, and embargo dates.

Moreover, Tom Henderson also elaborated that it would be wise for Sony to hold the well-requested PlayStation Showcase event due to the upcoming PSVR 2 launch and 2023 impending releases. However, even he does not know for sure.

Microsoft is currently under investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which is currently deciding whether I.P.s like Call of Duty will fall under the umbrella of Microsoft.

Microsoft has responded that Sony is currently leading the market, citing,

[Sony features a] strong first-party game catalogue and extensive portfolio of exclusive arrangements with third-party publishers. There were over 280 exclusive first and third-party titles on PlayStation in 2021, nearly five times as many as on Xbox.

Sony might have called off the PlayStation Showcase event in case it strengthens the Argument by Microsoft. However, it is best to take this news with a grain of salt, as this rumor can be wrong like others in the past.
