Square Enix Profits Surge 88% Driven by Strong Final Fantasy Sales

Square Enix reports an 88% year-over-year operating income increase for Q1 2026, as Final Fantasy sales support Digital Entertainment growth.

Story Highlights

  • Square Enix’s operating income rose 88.6% year over year to ¥17,008 million, while net sales climbed 32.3% to ¥78,423 million.
  • Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s expansion to new platforms, along with renewed activity around Final Fantasy XIV, helped drive Digital Entertainment segment growth.
  • The results provide an encouraging early sign for Square Enix’s ongoing multiplatform strategy.

Square Enix has opened its new financial year with a considerable jump in operating income. The publisher’s consolidated results for the three months ended June 30, 2026 show an 88.6% year-over-year increase in operating income, with Final Fantasy sales helping its Digital Entertainment business maintain momentum.

Square Enix Starts The Financial Year Strongly

According to Square Enix’s consolidated financial results, operating income rose sharply during the opening quarter of its current fiscal year.

Net sales totaled ¥78,423 million, up 32.3% year over year, while operating income reached ¥17,008 million, up 88.6%. Ordinary income jumped 172.4% to ¥18,766 million, and profit attributable to owners of the parent rose 175.7% to ¥13,244 million.

The improved result arrives as Square Enix continues reorganizing its development pipeline and releasing more games across multiple platforms. That strategy has not inspired universal confidence, particularly after the company’s restructuring and workforce reductions. One strong quarter does not erase those longer-term concerns.

Still, this is a far better position than another disappointing earnings update.

Final Fantasy Remains A Crucial Franchise

Square Enix’s Digital Entertainment segment, which covers the planning, development, and operation of its games across consoles, PC, and smart devices, posted net sales of ¥49,960 million, up 51.8%, and operating income of ¥15,583 million, up 91.8%.

Within that segment, the HD Games sub-segment grew on the strength of new titles including Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s launch on Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows, along with The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, plus continued growth in catalog title sales.

The MMO sub-segment saw net sales rise on improved user activity following the announcement of Final Fantasy XIV’s newest expansion, though profit growth was more modest since the company has already begun booking expenses tied to that expansion’s planned early 2027 release.

The Games for Smart Devices/PC Browser sub-segment also grew, helped by Dissidia Duelum Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest Smash/Grow.

Final Fantasy remains one of Square Enix’s strongest assets, particularly as the publisher expands beyond its previous platform exclusive approach. Bringing established releases to additional consoles gives the company access to new players without relying entirely on expensive, high-risk projects. Even so, some of this quarter’s profit growth in the MMO business reflects timing of expense recognition rather than sales alone, a reminder that operating income gains do not always map directly onto game sales.

Square Enix Needs To Continue To Momentum

That is the correct takeaway for now. Final Fantasy’s continued commercial strength and a broader multiplatform push give Square Enix reasons to be optimistic, but consistency will matter more than one quarter. Square Enix has a history of being disappointed by sales in their games, and this might be the first report in years that shows some positivity.

The publisher now needs to turn this early momentum into sustainable growth while avoiding the uneven release quality, costly cancellations, and strategic reversals that created skepticism in the first place. An 88.6% operating income increase is an excellent start. Maintaining it will be the harder part.
