Tomb Raider IP Rights Seemingly Purchased By Amazon For $600 Million

Embracer Group appears to have sold the IP just after acquiring it.

 Story Highlights

  • Amazon has reportedly bought the Tomb Raider rights from Embracer Group in a new acquisition, according to a surfaced report.
  • The Tomb Raider franchise, including its video games, TV rights, films, merchandise, and the like, is owned by Amazon now. Embracer group will no longer withhold the rights after it acquired from its recent buyouts.
  • The deal was concluded for $600 million, which makes the buyout the second-largest in Amazon’s history.
  • Previously, Amazon has shown interest in publishing an unannounced Tomb Raider project. Moreover, a game is also reported to be unveiled this year.

Amazon has seemingly purchased the Tomb Raider rights, as per a new report by Fellowship of Fans. The report claims that the following franchise, including its games, TV licenses, movies, and all commodities, is now the umbrella of Amazon’s long list of influential IPs. Amazon bagged the deal for reportedly $600 million.

The massive deal was concluded recently along with the Embracer Group, the company that has been on a spree to engage in a slew of acquisitions in the gaming industry. For instance, the giant conglomerate has recently acquired Square Enix’s western subsidiaries and its IPs during the last year.

The Tomb Raider rights also came along with one of Embracer Group’s previous acquisitions with Square Enix. If the lingering rumors are genuine, then it would be the second-largest deal in Amazon’s history, only being overshadowed by the TV rights for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Embracer Group just sold their ‘Tomb Raider’ rights to Amazon for a deal that we can exclusively reveal as being approximately a 600 Million overall package making it Amazon’s second biggest purchase after purchasing the television rights for ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’. Therefore, this puts into perspective the cost and prices that Embracer maybe looking for,” noted Fellowship of Fans on the site.

Fellowship of Fans appears to hold a credible track record in the TV industry; for instance, it has accurately forecasted some major early The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power story moments many months before the release of the show.

It is worth noting that the currency is not yet confirmed in the rumor, but it is more likely to be USD if we delve into Embracer Group’s previous buyouts. For instance, the previous acquisition of Square Enix and Embracer Group concluded for $300 million.

Moreover, it is predicted that the acquisition of the rights to the Tomb Raider IP will give Amazon ownership over both the past and upcoming movies, games, and other franchise-related products. On the other hand, Embracer Group will no longer be eligible to hold any rights on the series.

Leaks also emerged a week ago that noted the announcement of a new Tomb Raider game to arrive this year. However, it yet remains unclear whether it’s an installment in Lara Croft’s reboot ventures or a whole new direction altogether. A reveal may follow suit in the upcoming E3 event during the summer months.

Amazon has also previously shown interest in developing more Tomb Raider video games, as it had announced to be the publisher of a new unannounced Tomb Raider project. The latest acquisition of the gaming industry may further compel the colossal company to release more entries in the future.

All in all, we could see the game arrive next year if it does not suffer internal delays in development.
