Sony is moving ahead with its plan to end physical PlayStation game disc production in 2028, and new PS5 packaging reportedly makes that deadline clear to buyers.

New PS5s Now Come With Warning Labels 

As noticed by Behind the Games, new PS5 boxes now arrive with a warning label saying that PlayStation games released after January 2028 will only be available on the PlayStation Store.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Starting in January 2028, new PlayStation game releases will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and through retailers exclusively in digital format. Game discs released before January 2028 will continue to be compatible with this console.

Sony Is Not Reversing the Decision To End Physical Discs

The warning labels are not merely precautionary language. Sony has announced its intention to discontinue physical PlayStation game discs in 2028, and the company is not backing away from that plan despite criticism from players and preservation advocates.

Sony’s chief financial officer reportedly addressed the backlash directly, saying it had “no impact” on the company’s plans and will continue towards an “All-digital” future.

If you plan to buy a detachable disc drive or a PS5 with a physical drive, know that physical discs will stop production by 2028 and the drive will only be usable for games released on discs before 2028.
