Due to numerous factors, consoles of this generation haven’t been available widely. Players have wanted to buy the new PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X|S but getting these consoles has been rather hard. The supply just isn’t meeting the demand and this has resulted in sales of next-generation consoles being less. However, Microsoft has been changing this trend recently and making the Xbox Series X|S available in bulk. Unlike the first year of next-generation consoles, players can actually see the Xbox consoles in stock.
Recently, a report from NPD Group in the United States reflects this supply in amazing figures for Xbox Series X|S consoles. Microsoft has set a new high for Xbox sales figures in March, according to the Executive Director and Video Game Industry Advisor from NPD Group, Mat Piscatella. Xbox Series X|S seemingly sold over 433,000 units last month, which is its highest performance for the company in over a decade. It has set a new all-time record for sales and units sold in the United States.
March 2022 US NPD THREAD – March 2022 consumer spending across video game hardware, content and accessories declined 15% vs YA, to $4.9B. Declines were seen across all major categories of spend. First quarter 2022 spending fell 8% vs Q1 2021, to $13.9B. pic.twitter.com/gOUUdE3Dlp

Previously, Microsoft has set records in the past decade for these figures in the United States. Xbox 360 sold the highest amount of units in March back in 2011, with 430,000. On the other hand, Xbox previously had an all-time record performance for revenue in March 2014. However, this month’s sales have broken both of these records of the previous generations. Considering the difficulties that studios have faced recently, this is a huge achievement.
US NPD HW – Xbox Series was the best-selling hardware platform of both March 2022 and the first quarter in dollars, while Switch led both time periods in unit sales.

Xbox also outsold both the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 5 in the United States this March. It outsold both the consoles in both revenue and units. Nintendo Switch has been very dominant in this area in the near past, so beating it is a great triumph. This also shows how Microsoft are finally meeting the demands of consumers and supplying the consoles. Corresponding to the needs of its customers has given rise to this all-time high for the company.
In another statistic, Xbox Series X|S was also the best-selling hardware of the entire first quarter in terms of revenue. Only the Nintendo Switch could beat it in total units sold during this time. However, the Xbox Series X|S has generated the most revenue while setting new records for Microsoft. After more than a year of COVID-19 damaging supplies, it seems like the company is getting things in order.
Overall, the hardware sales are still suffering and are down by 15% from last year’s first-quarter sales. So, even though Microsoft is doing well with the Xbox Series X|S, supplies are still not that great. We can only hope that this trend changes as the year goes by. Microsoft is meeting the demand of consumers and hopefully, other companies will follow suit very soon.
