Role-playing games arguably constitute the most popular genre in the gaming world. Freedom of choice and making your own way is the whole point of video games, and nothing sums that up better than RPGs. So, it’s no surprise most players prefer RPG games.
We would need a whole other article to list all of the great RPG franchises which have made an impact. There are so many new games every year that brilliantly incorporate the role-playing formula. One franchise that will always stay synonymous with the genre, however, is Fallout.
The series from Bethesda with a post-apocalyptic nuclear setting is one of the most popular RPG franchises of all time. Fallout’s action and unique setting are the reason it has been around for 25 years. Now, the director of one of the best games in the series is interested in returning.
Major Takeaways:
- Fallout: New Vegas director Josh Sawyer says he can see himself working on another Fallout game.
- He would like a game set in California or the Midwest.
- Involvement will depend on the team working on the game.
Josh Sawyer, the director of Fallout: New Vegas, has said that he could see himself making another Fallout game. While talking to Kinda Funny Games about his new title Pentiment, Sawyer talked about the Fallout franchise. He said anything but no to working on a new game in the series:
I love Fallout, I love the setting, I could see myself working on it again but you know, we’ll see where the future takes me.”
Sawyer even talked about where he would like his Fallout game to take place. The Midwest and California are the two places that the Fallout: New Vegas director would explore in his game. But, he also said that the whole team has to be passionate about the project:
California or the Midwest would be very interesting. Obviously, I have to be passionate about it as a Director but also that the team is really excited about and also that works within the larger idea of the IP.”
He even entertained the idea of a Fallout game taking place outside the USA. Working on an established franchise is more difficult as it has to appeal to the previous games according to Sawyer. However, he thinks it brings forth a lot of cool ideas and his involvement will depend on how the team looks like:
Of course, if we ever got the opportunity to make another Fallout game, we’d make it. At some point, we’ll start looking into what those next games are going to be, and I would be surprised if Fallout is not on that list.”
So, there is clear interest from this side and a possibility this happens. A second New Vegas game has been in the rumor mill and considering the fan following the first one, it’s easy to see why. Even though it will be a long time before we see a Fallout game from Sawyer, his words and relationship with Obsidian give us some hope.
