CDPR Lead Condemns Gamers For Comparing Starfield With Cyberpunk 2077

CD Projekt Red Senior Quest Designer Patrick K. Mills recently took to Twitter to call out gamers who are comparing Starfield with Cyberpunk 2077. The veteran dev has raised concerns about how people are pitting both games’ features against each other without any context just to make Starfield look bad. He said that the “fake criticism” actively harms a gaming community and how it views a game.

The video embedded in the tweet emphasizes how both entries let players swim through water, how grenades react to the surroundings, and how NPCs behave when they are held at gunpoint. As per the dev, it feels like an attempt to make Starfield look inferior because the only shown elements do not feel as dynamic as the one in Cyberpunk 2077.

The developer also elaborated in a subsequent tweet that there is no analysis or commentary for added context in the comparison video. In other words, it is not a faithful comparison between Starfield and Cyberpunk 2077 and uses out-of-context footage to prove a supposed false notion. However, some gamers have disagreed with the tweets and say that Starfield lacks simple attention to detail.

Is that the point? There's no commentary, just a handful of features being compared. What's the meaning of this comparison? How does this relate to how I should feel about or experience these games? Useless criticism.

The dev speaks from experience because similar videos were made against Cyberpunk 2077 when it was new and full of bugs and missing features. It is not unusual for users to start comparing games’ mediocre features to other allegedly better titles as a point of criticism. For example, Baldur’s Gate 3 has recently been compared with other RPGs with supposedly inferior features for similar reasons.

Starfield has bathed in a successful release after spending 25 years in the brewer. In early access, it had already gained a million users with only the premium edition owners. It also did not take long for the entry to flock over a million concurrent players soon after release. Now, the number has bumped up to six million downloads, as the space-faring RPG becomes Bethesda’s biggest launch.

Microsoft’s flagship exclusive has now come out across all current-gen platforms on PC, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S only. It runs at a locked 30 FPS on consoles but can run around an average of 60 FPS on PCs for players equipped with high-end specifications.
