Lords Of The Fallen’s Budget Surpassed $66 Million

This is CI Games' most expensive production to date.

Story Highlights

  • Lords of the Fallen is one of the latest releases of 2023, gracing the Soulslike genre.
  • In the midst of a conference call, it’s been revealed that the game had a budget of $66 million.
  • Subsequently, Lord of the Fallen has become CI Games’ most expensive production ever.

In a new conference call documented by Bankier.pl, it was revealed that the total cost that it took to create Lords of the Fallen from scratch exceeded $66 million. Comparing this figure to the usual budget of most games, it’s safe to say that the Soulslike at hand is one of the most expensive games ever made to date. Here is a breakdown of the cumulative budget of Lords of the Fallen.

  • Total production cost (excluding engine license fees): 178 Million PLN (Polish Zloty)
  • Marketing cost: 81.5 Million PLN
  • Physical media cost: 21.5 Million PLN

Add all those numbers and convert the sum to USD at the time of writing, and you get about 66.35 million in USD. Yeah, this sure was one whopper of a game to make. Additionally, it’s worth noting that 54% of all sales amounted to digital units sold on consoles, with 55% of them pertaining to the game’s Deluxe Edition, which costs $79.99

An interesting point that bears noticing here is that Lords of the Fallen has become CI Games’ — the publisher — most high-priced venture to date. In retrospect, the company has been making notable titles for a while now, including the Sniper franchise of shooter titles, and, of course, the earlier version of Lords of the Fallen that was released in 2014.

In the report, the president of CI Games President Tymiński said, “The sentiment is getting better and better. We listen to the game community [and] take into account their feedback. We are improving the game and introducing further patches,” thereby reassuring fans that a lot more is to come for Lords of the Fallen, and the player base is being actively listened to.

Adding his opinion to this long-form debate, Tymiński believes that digital sales are set to prevail in the future, as compared to physical ones. In recent times, major news has popped up regarding this debate alone. Earlier this month, Walmart stepped up to announce that it will no longer sell physical media across all its retail stores from 2024. Moreover, Best Buy has also been rumored to follow suit.

On a side note, Lords of the Fallen has sold over 1 million copies in less than 10 days. Thanks to the devs listening to fan feedback, player complaints regarding the lack of vestiges in NG+ and overly heightened difficulty have all been addressed in one of its latest patches, with more updates to come in the future. Surprisingly, this comes right after the devs said the title won’t get its difficulty adjusted.

Lords of the Fallen is the most important and ambitious game we’ve developed in our 20-year history, and the first in our new planned AAA pipeline of games in the years ahead. To see this fresh and innovative take on the action-RPG achieve one million sales in just 10 days has been humbling for everybody at Hexworks and CI Games.”

Lords of the Fallen was released on October 13, 2023, for next-gen platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. eXputer rated the Soulslike 3.5/5 stars, criticizing its performance issues and heightened artificial difficulty while praising the brilliant art design and staggering realm shift mechanic.
