Story Highlights
- Sam Lake is Remedy’s Creative Director, known for his work on Alan Wake and Control.
- In an interview, Sam expresses a wish to make a “crazy, big budget, dark gothic fantasy game.”
- Remedy Entertainment’s latest release is Alan Wake 2, the sequel to 2010’s Alan Wake.
Remedy Entertainment has just released Alan Wake 2, with creative figure Sam Lake hot on the game’s active development. As the title enjoys its post-launch week with rave reviews, a tidbit from the back of Sam’s mind has surfaced, stating what the man has kept on the back burner for a while. According to an interview with GQ, the Max Payne writer wants to create a dark-toned goth-fantasy AAA game.
There are other stories [Sam Lake] has always wanted to tell: ‘One was this crazy, huge budget, dark gothic fantasy, which I haven’t used for anything yet.'”
It bears noticing that Remedy Entertainment, along with the genius of Sam, of course, has been pushing out tip-top titles over the course of its establishment. The two Max Payne titles that it worked on, encompassed by thrilling shooting mechanics combined with engaging plotlines, followed by Control’s brilliance are some of the most glaring highlights of its portfolio.
And I haven’t even put Alan Wake in the mix yet—an IP that’s probably going down as one of the finest collections of survival horror games in the world. The first Alan Wake traces its initial release to 2010, with a remastered version released in 2021 for modern-day platforms. Finally, after almost one and a half decades, Alan Wake 2 is here, and it’s flat-out brilliant by every stretch of the imagination.

For those not in the know, Remedy has a number of titles under the works, and this is outside of the multiple other Control sequels apart from Control 2 that are in development to some extent. If you head over to its official website, you’ll note Vanguard and Condor as upcoming Remedy games, both of which are mere codenames at the moment though. And then there are the Max Payne remakes, which as per the dev, are progressing well.
Perhaps, Sam Lake could look into manifesting this high-level dark fantasy gothic game when the time is right, and Remedy has the flexibility to experiment with a different project. Knowing the studio and the work it’s put out so far, I’m hard-pressed not to anticipate such a game doing great across the board. “I mean, if there’s someone who can do something like that and turn it into something awesome and magical it’s Remedy and Sam,” says AbsentShift on X, commenting on the news.
eXputer spoke with Sam Lake too in recent times, going over the development of Alan Wake 2 and a number of other prominent facets concerning the sequel now that it’s finally here. Check out the write-up for more detailed insights.
