Yakuza: Like A Dragon Gets Its Long-Awaited Real-Time Combat Mod

Yakuza: Like A Dragon has finally received a highly-anticipated mod that entirely revamps its gameplay—Like A Brawler. Players can take control of Kasuga Ichiban and revisit Yokohama in the iconic real-time combat system that the series is known for. According to the Nexus mods page, Like A Brawler allows Ichiban to perform brand new heat actions and utilize multiple styles to dispatch his foes.

The brief clip shows the mod in action as Ichiban switches through the various combat modes and uses cinematic finishers, seemingly to wrap up an encounter or take down an enemy. This project for Yakuza: Like A Dragon is a single-man endeavor that’s been in the works for quite some time now, already wracking up almost 2,500 downloads. 

Players must note that Like A Brawler only supports English and Japanese languages so if you’re playing in a language other than those two, you’ll have to change it. Installation instructions and a couple of general troubleshooting questions have been answered on the mod’s page to ensure a smooth set-up process.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon served as a turning point in the franchise as the reigns were passed down from Kiryu to Ichiban. Furthermore, it dropped the famous action gameplay in favor of turn-based combat as far as the mainline games were concerned. Spin-off titles like Judgement and its sequel became the new home for fisticuffs and were received quite well.

In its recent management meeting, SEGA revealed that Yakuza: Like A Dragon sold nearly 2 million copies, with the bulk of that figure being moved overseas. Given that every game in the series until Like A Dragon Gaiden and Infinite Wealth didn’t get simultaneous releases, it reflects the degree and gravity of success attained by this franchise outside of Japan.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon launched on January 26, 2020, in Japan for the PlayStation 4 and arriving on other systems later on. The sequel, Infinite Wealth, is scheduled for launch on all PC, current-gen, and last-gen platforms on January 26, 2024.
