Starfield Wins Award For Most Innovative Gameplay At Steam Awards

Starfield is 2023’s one of the largest and most popular releases, but it has also experienced a fair share of criticism for a variety of reasons. As per the bulk of reviews, the game is riddled with outdated gameplay mechanics that often overpower all the fun it can offer during long playthroughs. Despite the firm stance of users against these features, the RPG has won an award for the “Most Innovative Gameplay” in the Steam Awards.

The astonishing Starfield news was revealed on its official Twitter page, quickly attracting the eyes of the gaming community. Many fans of the new entry have congratulated the RPG for reaching such a high status amidst the tough competition on Steam. The award was only made possible after players contributed and voted for the game. However, the other portion of Twitter users have called out Steam and mocked its award system.

The supposed issue with Steam Awards has been heightened this year because Red Dead Redemption 2 also won the “Labor of Love” award despite being released over half a decade ago. Additionally, it has had no major updates in the last three years. Like RDR2, Starfield has allegedly been wrongfully voted by players in a supposed attempt to corrupt the annual Steam Awards event for the fun of it.

I’m pretty sure that was done as a joke, same way RDR2 got a ‘Labour of Love’ while not receiving updates for 3 years. I’m afraid there’s nothing innovative in Starfield’s gameplay whatsoever.”

Many Twitter users have found it ironic that Starfield won the award for something that a majority of users have often criticized, claiming the title was voted as a joke. As a result, the post has seen a slew of debates after the new award was declared. Many Starfield fans have supported its success and pointed out the innovative parts of the gameplay, while the other group has given examples from different titles or downplayed the feats.

To put things into perspective, Starfield currently stands at a “Mostly Negative” rating on Steam. After an initial decent reception, Bethesda’s RPG has slowly been degrading over a few months, along with the reviews of the players. Only 28% of the recent player scores are positive at the moment, which is a further reduction from 34% a week ago. Additionally, an average Starfield player has only spent 40 hours in the expansive Bethesda universe.

The RPG came out on September 6, 2023, for Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC. eXputer’s Asad Ahmed reviewed Starfield with a decent 3.5/5 score, praising it for “an expansive galaxy ripe for exploration,” and aesthetic visuals.
