Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is the latest game in the long-running Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s Like a Dragon franchise, which was previously known as Yakuza for Western audiences. As per a 4gamer interview with the developer studio’s frontman Masayoshi Yokoyama, it has been revealed that Infinite Wealth’s physical pre-order sales are the highest in the history of the series. A commendable feat, to say the least.
Sales are particularly strong in Japan. Currently, there is a packaged version and a digital version, so it is not possible to compare the numbers with past works, but if you just look at the number of pre-orders for the packaged version, it is probably the ‘best’ in the history of the series. I can say this now, but when we released ‘Ryu Ga Gotoku 7,’ there were extremely few orders for the packaged version,” iterates Yokoyama.
Other topics were expanded on as well, such as how the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic led to stunted growth of Infinite’s Wealth development. As per the Chief Producer of the Like a Dragon series Hiroyuki Sakamoto, the developers had to analyze Hawaii remotely to be able to portray it in their game accurately while also making sure that progress in making the title wasn’t stopped completely.
Approximately one-third of the production period was during a time when the impact of the coronavirus was large, so there was a period when we were worried about the pace at which we should make the game and whether we would be able to make it properly. That’s why we continued production while conducting on-site reporting in Hawaii remotely,” says Sakamoto.
On a side note, Infinite Wealth has a map size that’s thrice the size of its predecessor, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, so the prospect of going through the entire title sure sounds exciting. However, if you’ve been holding back on purchasing the title thinking that it’ll land on Game Pass sooner or later, don’t. “At the moment, there are no plans for Infinite Wealth to come to Game Pass,” confirmed RGG Studio head a while back.
