A New ‘Far Cry’ Game Is in Development at Ubisoft’s Vantage Studios

Ubisoft reportedly has another Far Cry project in development, separate from the Far Cry 7 fans have been waiting for.

According to a report from Insider Gaming, the unannounced title is codenamed Kodiak and is being developed under Ubisoft’s Vantage Studios.

The report arrives nearly five years after Far Cry 6 debuted. Ubisoft’s latest mainline installment later became available through Xbox Game Pass, but its familiar formula left some players craving a more substantial shake-up.

Kodiak Reportedly Replaces a Canceled Far Cry Project

Kodiak is an open-world Far Cry game where “player interactions and player-driven stories take center stage”. It is reportedly being built on the foundations of another unannounced Far Cry game (Codename Maverik) that has since been cancelled.

It’s important to note that Kodiak is separate from the mainline Far Cry entry that is also in development under the codename Blackbird. Insider Gaming also stated that Far Cry 7, which initially faced some development hurdles, is now on the right path, with Charlie Guillemot describing it as “honestly impressive” and as “Act One”, meaning more entries could follow up if Far Cry 7 succeeds.

Ubisoft Has Plenty of Far Cry History to Build On

The series remains one of Ubisoft’s most recognizable properties. Far Cry 5 surpassed 30 million players, demonstrating the franchise’s reach even years after its original release.

Its most recent entry was considerably more divisive. Our Far Cry 6 review praised parts of the experience but criticized how closely it followed Ubisoft’s established open-world blueprint. Kodiak could offer an opportunity to experiment, especially if it is smaller in scope than a numbered sequel.

Interest in the series also extends far beyond Ubisoft’s current releases. The original Far Cry’s source code leaked online almost two decades after launch, while one modder even created a VR version of the first game.

For now, Kodiak sounds like an early-stage project rather than something players should expect soon. Still, another Far Cry game being spun up suggests Ubisoft is not stepping away from the franchise; it may simply be reconsidering what its next experiment should look like.
