The best abilities in Spider-Man 2 differ for both Peter and Miles since the two Spider-Men get access to different special powers. Some of the abilities are obtained during the end-game, and I will be discussing those that will contain spoilers, so proceed only if you’re nearing the final act.

Best Abilities For Peter

Peter, near the end of the story, not only has access to the Symbiote abilities but also the Anti-Venom abilities. You can even choose to use the Spider-Arm abilities however I personally like the Symboite ones more. Overall, Peter offers a bigger variety in terms of abilities when compared to Miles Morales.

1. Anti-Venom Blast

  • Why I Chose This: Anti-Venom Blast is very useful for clearing enemies in a wide AoE and can make short work of smaller foes quickly.

The Anti-Venom Blast is undoubtedly the best ability that Peter can use as it can not only destroy a group of enemies but also deal large damage to boss’s health bars. Additionally, the Anti-Venom power means that you can deal more damage against the Symbiote enemies using this ability. It is also really helpful in end-game boss battles where fodder enemies try to gank on the player.

  • Deals substantial dmg in a large AoE, especially against Symbiotes.
  • Can be paired up with other abilities like the Web Grabber.
  • Limited to only the area around your vicinity.
  • Throws away smaller enemies outside attack range.

2. Anti-Venom Tempest

  • Why I Chose This: Anti-Venom Tempest is great for crowd control with its wide range and launches multiple enemies into the air for extra attack openings.

It is another great ability to deal with a large group of enemies at once. You will not only deal lasting damage to the enemies but will also launch them up, leaving them vulnerable to more combos even after the ability ends. Make sure to use the ability when enemies fall in range since Anti-Venom Tempest cannot launch enemies that are afar. I often used this ability in my playthrough and highly recommend it for its great utility. 

  • Launches foes upward, leaving them open for more dmg.
  • Deals decent dmg in a wide AoE, effective against Venom-type enemies.
  • Effectiveness diminishes against enemies that can’t be lifted.
  • Enemies thrown far away can not be attacked.

3. Anti-Venom Yank

  • Why I Chose This: Anti-Venom Yank can easily finish off smaller enemies and pulls them near you from great distances for extra dmg.

Grab all enemies that are in front of you at once with the upgraded Anti-Venom Yank and throw them into the ground whilst also bringing them closer to Spider-Man. You can easily remove the pressure using the Anti-Venom Yank if you’re getting hit by multiple enemies from all sides. You can even use the yank from a longer range.

  • Can effectively grab enemies and slam them near you.
  • Has decent range and leaves the foes vulnerable to more dmg.
  • Useless against those enemies who can’t be grabbed.
  • Number of enemies grabbed is low without upgrades.

4. Spider Barrage

  • Why I Chose This: Spider Barrage can be very helpful for dealing decent dmg to brutes and bosses in the early game.

Spider Barrage is an extremely underrated ability and is actually really great against 1v1 boss battles. Use the Spider Arms to extend your combo and deal heavy damage to a single enemy. This ability might not be as good for dealing with a group of enemies, but it definitely shines in the boss battles, which you’ll face a lot during the final act.

  • Deals decent dmg to an enemy and stun locks smaller foes.
  • Can be used in between combos making it very versatile.
  • Only useful in dealing dmg to a single enemy.
  • Leaves you susceptible to dmg if the enemy is not stunned.

5. Anti-Venom Punch

  • Why I Chose This: Anti-Venom Punch deals substantial dmg to a single enemy and can be aimed properly to hit more and instantly defeats smaller enemies.

It is one of the best abilities in Spider-Man 2 to deal with a single tough enemy or a boss. Use the tentacles to throw a strong punch that will not only send the enemy flying but will also stick them to the wall, effectively subduing them for the rest of the battle. 

  • Has long range and hits a single enemy hard.
  • Can be aimed to hit multiple enemies in a line.
  • Not suitable for AoE situations.
  • Aiming can be difficult in the heat of battle.

6. Anti-Venom Bomb

  • Why I Chose This: Anti-Venom Bomb is effective in clearing multiple enemies and also staggers them, especially useful against Symbiotes.

It is a really great ability to deal with a group of Symbiote enemies as the bomb deals Anti-Venom damage as it explodes. However, I did not find this ability to be that useful against other enemy types. However, the endgame is filled with Symbiote enemies, so this ability comes in really handy, especially while clearing the Symbiote Nests.

  • Has great AoE and very effective against Venom-type enemies.
  • Can stagger most foes for extra hits.
  • Can be quite difficult to aim at the desired position.
  • Is an Anti-Venom specific ability so acquired late in the game.

7. Spider Rush

  • Why I Chose This: Spider Rush is one of your first abilities and is essentially the most effective in early-game and also remains relevent in later encounters.

Using the Spider Arms, move out of a heated situation but also take the enemies that come in your path with you. The upgraded version of the ability even allows you to stick enemies to the wall as you propel out using the Spider Arms. The basic ability itself is not that good, so you should get both of its upgrades from the skill tree to make the most out of it.

  • Can effectively close distance while damaging enemies.
  • Provides greaat support for clearing multiple foes in the early-game.
  • Useful utility is unlocked after upgrades.
  • Deals less dmg to those enemies that can’t be pushed.

8. Anti-Venom Strike

  • Why I Chose This: Anti-Venom Strike deals sufficient dmg in a line in front of you, webs smaller foes to surfaces and especially effective against Symbiotes. 

This is a good ability but falls flat when compared to other available options. It does allow for good crowd control and even launches enemies in the air, leaving them vulnerable for more punishes. However, I just didn’t like how little damage the Anti-Venom Strike deals, especially during boss battles.

  • Can effectively clear enemies in front of you.
  • Launches enemies upward leaving them vulnerable to dmg.
  • Can be difficult to aim properly.
  • Only effective in a single line in front of you.

Best Abilities For Miles

The Venom Powers of Miles from the Miles Morales game make a return. Insomniac has also added a set of Evolved Venom Powers for Miles in Spider-Man 2, which feature the distinct blue lightning instead of the yellow lightning.

1. Galvanize

  • Why I Chose This: Galvanize is very viable in dealing with hordes of enemies and deals continuous dmg and staggers smaller foes.

Even though the Galvanize ability is unlocked pretty late in the campaign, it is still the most powerful Evolved Venom Power that Miles can use. You will basically launch an enemy using a lightning-infused punch, but the enemy will actually stay in the air and release lightning bolts, which will damage nearby enemies. You can even increase the number of strikes released by galvanized enemies by hitting them with more attacks.

  • Effective for clearing multiple enemies.
  • Attacking galvanized enemies summons more bolts.
  • Useless in 1v1 fights.
  • Acquired very late in the game.

2. Reverse Flux

  • Why I Chose This: Reverse Flux can pick up enemies from afar, group them together, making it easy to hit everyone with subsequent attacks.

Reverse Flux is one of the best abilities for crowd-controlling multiple enemies at once in Spider-Man 2. Utilizing the Evolved Venom Energy, Miles will pull all the enemies towards himself and then push them all away by hitting them with a lightning strike. It is pretty amazing to deal with the Symbiote Nests since Miles does not have access to Anti-Venom Powers.

  • Gathers enemies towards you while damaging them.
  • Invaluable for clearing multiple enemies at once.
  • Doesn’t gather larger enemies, only damages them.
  • Requires upgrades to gather more enemies.

3. Thunder Burst

  • Why I Chose This: Thunder Burst can be used to achieve more freedom across the battlefield, closing in on enemies of interest and damaging them.

This ability is easily one of the best ranged special attacks that you can use. Basically, after using the Thunder Burst, Miles can teleport to ranged enemies and cause a small explosion upon landing near the enemies. You will not only get close to those annoying ranged enemies in Spider-Man 2 but will also damage them on impact.

  • Can teleport to enemies directly, effectively closing disatances.
  • Hits the target enemy, as well as a small AoE around it.
  • Comparativel lower damage of AoE of the ability itself.
  • Has a limited range of teleportation.

4. Venom Punch

  • Why I Chose This: Venom Punch is a must-have ability when dealing with elite enemies or bosses, as it packs quite a punch, literally.

For single targets or bosses, the Venom Punch is actually really useful in Spider-Man 2. It might not be that great for a group of enemies, but if you’re looking to deal large damage to bosses in a single strike, then the Venom Punch should be your go-to ability. As a bonus, it also throws the enemy away, giving you more room to think out your next strategy.

  • Deals substantial damage and stuns a single enemy.
  • Can knockback foes, useful for creating breathing room.
  • Most effective on solitary enemies, less useful in groups.
  • Can be difficult to aim to hit multiple enemies even after upgrades.

5. Chain Lightning

  • Why I Chose This: Chain Lightning is an asset when dealing with large groups, as it can simultaneously attack and chain together multiple foes.

Both the Chain Lightning and Venom Smash abilities achieve the same purpose in a sense, but I consider the upgraded version of Chain Lightning to be far superior. Not only is it quick to use, but you will be able to chain your Evolved Venom Lightning up to 6 enemies if they are close to each other.

  • Can effectively hit multiple enemies as it goes on.
  • Knocks back the enemies hit, allowing subsequent attacks.
  • Requires enemies to be closer to each other to chain without upgrades.
  • Less suitable for encounters with less enemy count.

6. Venom Smash

  • Why I Chose This: If you find yourself surrounded or ambushed, a Venom Smash does wonders to clear up the opposition, and stun those not yet finished.

The Venom Smash is also really good for crowd-controlling enemies. If you get jumped by a large number of foes, then the Venom Smash should be an easy way out of that situation. You can even upgrade the ability using the skill tree, which will allow you to launch enemies after performing a successful Venom Smash.

  • Can hit all enemies in a large AoE, highly valuable when surrounded.
  • Stuns all targets hit, allowing the use of follow up attacks.
  • Attack radius requires upgrades to become appreciable.
  • Usability diminishes as the number of enemies decreases.

Why We Didn’t Go For Others

Spider-Man 2 offers several other worthwhile abilities, but they didn’t make it to my top 14 list due to some individual factors:

  • Spider Shock (Peter Ability): Compared to other AoE attacks, its range is relatively short, which makes it less effective against groups of enemies.
  • Venom Dash (Miles Ability): Although it is a decent option, it requires precise aiming to hit the intended target and is less effective against shielded enemies.

My Thoughts On Abilities

I am so glad that the combat has been revamped with the addition of special attacks and that these attacks are bound to face buttons, which allow for seamless gameplay in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The abilities also introduce variety into your play style.

I also like using Peter a lot more since his abilities were not only more in number but also more fun to use. You should also use skill points to get upgrades for the abilities first, as they are really helpful for the early game.
