Witcher 3 Griffin School Gear [All Rarity Types]

The Griffin School Gear in Witcher 3 is one of the four School Gear. It has a Medium Armor Set that is designed for balanced fighters who want to focus on using Signs too. The Griffin School Gear has Gear set from Basic to Grandmaster level that is hidden at different locations in the game. To get the Griffin School Gear, you must find all of these diagrams in a separate Scavenger Hunt questline.

What Is Griffin School Gear

The Griffin School Gear is a complete set of equipment for Geralt. The Griffin Gear hails from the School of the Griffin, hence the name Griffin School Gear. Now, the whole Gear contains Armor, Trousers, Boots, Gauntlets, a Silversword, and a Steel sword. They are acquired by finding their relevant design Diagrams.

Now, there are a total of 5 different levels or Upgrades for the Gear. First, you get the Basic School Gear, which is, well, basic. Then we have the Enhanced, Superior, and Mastercrafted. If you have the DLC Blood & Wine, you can acquire the Grand Master upgrade for the School Gear. That is because the Grand Master in the game becomes available once you acquire the said DLC.

Apart from the Grand Master, all of the upgrades are available in the Base Game. Anyways, when you acquire the relevant Maps, you can read them when heading to the Quest Items in the game. That will start the relevant Quest for you. It will also update the quest if you have already begun that, giving you better information on other items.

Edwin Greloff’s Maps

There are a total of 4 Maps of Edwin Gerloff, and each of these starts one unique quest for the School Gear. Here is how it works.

• 1st Map of Edwin Greloff will start the Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Gear Part 1. It will lead you to diagrams of the Enhanced Trousers, Boots, and Steel Sword. 
• 2nd Map of Edwin Greloff starts off the Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Gear Part 2. The quest will then lead you to the remaining Enhanced Griffin Gear diagrams, the Armor, Gauntlets, and Silver Sword.
• 3rd Map of Edwin Greloff will then start the Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Gear Part 3. With the quest, you can acquire Superior Griffin Gear. But the quest will lead you to the diagrams of the complete Armor Set, including Armor, Trousers, Gauntlets, and Boots. In addition to that, it will lead you toward the Silver and Steel Swords.
• 4th Map of Edwin Greloff starts the Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Gear Part 4 in Witcher 3. If you are in the base game, it will be the last Scavenger Hunt for Griffin’s Gear. The quest will lead you to the Mastercrafted diagrams of the Griffin Gear. It will lead you to all of the parts diagrams, which are the Silver and Steel Swords, Armor, Trousers, Gauntlets, and Boots.

Now you might have noticed that the list doesn’t include the Basic Griffin School Gear, even though it is the Gear that you MUST acquire to upgrade to higher levels. That is because the quest to get the diagrams for the Basic Gear becomes available as soon as you acquire any one of the other maps or diagrams. We’ll further explain that in a while.

Acquiring The Griffin Gear

You can acquire the Griffin School Gear through a Quest. The Quest in Witcher 3 is named Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Gear. And to get the quest, you’ll have to perform one of the two tasks. First, you can either go to one specific Amateur Armorer in Witcher 3 and get the Maps that reveal the location of the Griffin School Gear. Or, you can go to any one of the Griffin School diagrams that you might come across while exploring the world of Witcher 3.

Our recommendation is to get to it by getting the Map. For that, you’ll have to travel to the Midcopse Village located in Velen. You can find the Village in the Western part of Velen. You can check out our Map Screen Capture below to get the exact location.

Once you get to the Village, you have to find the Armorer there. The Armorer won’t sell you the Griffin School Gear, but he will sell you Edwin Greloff’s Maps that will help you with the quest. You will need Edwin Greloff’s 1st and 2nd maps. Once acquired, the Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Gear side quest will start.

Now, Remember, you need the 1st and 2nd Map to start the Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Gear Part 1 and 2. But you shouldn’t pursue these parts for now. We’ll explain that in detail in a while. As of now, your focus should be to complete the ‘Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Gear’ quest. Once completed, you’ll acquire the diagrams for all of the Basic gear of the Griffin School.

Basic Griffin School Gear

Once you have acquired the maps in Witcher 3, you will get the first quest for the Griffin School Gear. Equip the quest, and then you’ll get a list of objectives. These objectives will ask you to find all Griffin School Witcher Gear and to find Witcher George’s grave. Now we’ll focus on directly acquiring the diagrams as they will help us get the Equipment Set. It will take us to the Witcher’s grave too.

Armor Set

Now, the complete Armor Set is found at one location. Whereas the Silver and Steel sword diagrams are each hidden at different locations. So, we’ll first go to the Armor Set’s diagrams location. That will take us to Witcher George’s grave and complete that part of the quest too.

To begin with, first head towards the Dragonslayers Grotto, which is located in Velen. It is in the Crookback Bog region that is towards the South of Velen. It has a Signpost so that you can head toward that. If you haven’t yet discovered it, we’ll post a screenshot of its location down below.

Okay, so once you have reached the location, you need to jump down and head inside. You’ll end up in catacombs that will be infested with Wraiths. Use Yrden to stop them from teleporting and kill them. Keep heading ahead until you will come up to a crumbling wall to the left. Use Aard which will break the wall, and you can go through it.

Now you will end up in a room filled with poison gas, and you need to run through it, ignoring it. Or, you can use Ingi here. It will burn up the gas and eventually kill all of the Wraiths inside. Once they are all killed, you will have to run through the whole area. Then you will reach another crumbling wall and use Aard on it again. That will take you to the main Chamber with the final boss that you have to defeat to get the diagrams. 

Boss Fight

The boss of Dragonslayer’s Grotto is none other than Ekimmara. The Ekimmara is a powerful monster so you will always have to be ready to dodge. Make sure that you are at the required level so you can fight it as it will be pretty hard to defeat. Make sure that you’re always ready to dodge its attacks and land a hit back. With time, you’ll be able to defeat it as it is not that hard, boss.

Once defeated, you will find a chest with Griffin Armor, Trousers, Boots, and Gauntlets diagrams. In addition to that, it will have Witcher George’s Journal too. When you read the Journal, it will reveal the location of the Steel and Silver Swords diagrams.

Steel Sword

From there on, we’ll first head toward the Steel Sword’s diagram. It is found in the Hindhold Watchtower. You’ll find it to the East of the Border Post in Velen. Now the Watch Tower is surrounded by the Endrega. You will have to defeat them when you get there. These won’t be a problem as, by now, you will have defeated a bunch of Spiders in the game.

Then you need to head inside and go up the stairs. Here you will find a flock of Harpies ready to attack. Defeating them will be quite troublesome. You can either use the Crossbow or use signs at them to defeat them. Then, you need to turn right, and you’ll find a wooden Door.

Head inside, and you’ll find a Skeleton leaning by the left wall in the room. When you loot the Skeleton, you’ll find the Griffin Steel Sword diagram and the Balstick’s Letter.

Silver Sword

Lastly, for the Griffin School’s Silver sword, you’ll need to head towards the Lornruk Lighthouse. There you will have to fight a Wyvern that has level 14. Make sure that you level up to that before heading towards it. Now the trick here is to go through a secret entrance, which will work for almost all of the lighthouses in Witcher 3.

For the Lornruk Lighthouse, we’ll head to the right side of the bridge that will lead us into the water. There, you’ll have to swim a little bit out until you’re straight ahead of the Power Stone. At that spot, you’ll have to dive into the water. Now, remember, you might end up facing a bunch of Drowned here, so it is better to come prepared.

Now when you dive, you’ll see a small cave right under the Island. Go in there, and you’ll end up in a cave. There, you’ll have to go up a bunch of platforms until you reach a wooden platform. Now, go up the stairs, and you’ll find a door that leads out in the open. Go through that door and immediately turn left, and you’ll find a wooden ladder going up.

There, you’ll find the Chest that contains the Basic Griffin Silver Sword diagram. It will also have a book named Crafting Notes too.

Crafting Ingredients And Effects

Once you have acquired all of the Diagrams, you need to head to a Craftsman. The Craftsman has to be of at least the Journeyman level to craft it for you. There are a bunch of Journeyman-level Armoreres and Weapons Smiths so that it won’t be that much of an issue.

Anyways, before you can head towards these Craftsmen, you need to have the required ingredients for the armor sets. With that, we’ll list its stats. Now, remember, the Attack and Defense stats depend highly on what level you or the Armorer and Blacksmith are. So they vary a lot. But what is fixed are the bonuses or effects that you get with the armor set. So we’ll go through the effects of the Griffin School Gear at the Basic level.

Griffin Armor

The main Armor piece is called the Basic Griffin Armor.

Ingredients

You’ll need the following ingredients to get it crafted from a Journeyman-level Armorer.

• 1x Shirt
• 2x Hardened Leather
• 1x Meteorite Silver Plate
• 5x Leather Straps
• 2x Monster Eye

Once it is crafted, it will have these effects.

• +5% Sign Intensity.
• +5% Piercing Damage resistance.
• +5% Bludgeoning Damage resistance.
• +10% Slashing Damage resistance.
• +15% Monsters Damage resistance.

Griffin Trousers

The Trousers have the following Ingredients and Stats.

Griffin Gauntlets

As for the Basic Griffin Gauntlets, here are its required Ingredients and Effects.

Griffin Silver Sword

The Silver Sword has these Effects.

• +5% Sign Intensity.
• +20% Monsters Bonus experience.

Enhanced Griffin School Gear

Once you have acquired the Basic Griffin School Gear in Witcher 3, you can work your way to get the Enhanced Griffin School Gear. We’ve already explained that you need the Gear level before that one to craft the upgraded School Gear.

Okay, so the Enhanced School Gear is divided into two quests. These quests are named “Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Gear Part 1” and “Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Gear Part 2”. In Part 1, we’ll have to hunt for the Enhanced Boots, Trousers, and Steel Sword of the Griffin School Gear. Whereas in Part 2, we will look for the remaining items which are Armor, Gauntlets, and the Silver Sword.

Part 1 of the quest becomes available when you get 1st Edwin Greloff map. Whereas Part 2 unlocks by purchasing and reading the 2nd Edwin Greloff map. As we’ve already explained, you can buy these maps from the Armorer in Midscope Village in Velen.

Part 1: Boots, Trousers, And Steel Sword

As we’ve mentioned before, the quest is divided into two parts. Part 1 leads you to the Boots, Trousers, and Witcher Steel Sword. Activate the quest, and let’s get hunting.

Boots

First, for the boots, you’ll need to head towards unnamed ruins. These ruins are to the northwest of the Inn at the Crossroads. Get on your horse and go there, and you will come to ruins. We will post a location for the ruins. You can scroll down to check it.

It is an unnamed location, so there isn’t any name to guide you to it. Once you get there, you will have to face a flying Forktail at that location. It can be a hard foe, so you must come prepared. You will have to make sure that you have the highest level crossbow to deal the most damage to it. And beware of its sharp tail and teeth. With extra care, you can take it out in no time.

Once it is down, you can go inside the ruins and look for the chest. The chest should be on the western side of the Ruins. Inside it, you will find the diagram of the Enhanced Griffin Boots.

Trousers

The Trousers of the Enhanced Griffin School Gear are found near the Crow’s Perch signpost. Face the Bridge that leads into the town, and then go right. Keep going near the moat, and you will come across the Burned Ruins. These are the same ruins near which you will find the powerful Shrieker.

Anyways, when you head to the Ruins, you’ll find an area with collapsed rubble that is still smoking. Go there, and you will find a Chest. If you can’t find it, you can use your witcher senses. The Chest will contain the Diagram of the Enhanced Griffin Trousers.

Steel Sword

Finally, we’ll look for the last diagram to complete the Part 1 quest of the Griffin School Gear. For that, you’ll have to get to the Midscope Village. From there, head straight west from Midscope Village, and you will come across the ruins of a castle. We’ll have the location of the ruins right below; check them out if you can’t find them on your own.

Once you get to it, you will find out that it is filled with a group of bandits. Get rid of all these bandits, and then you head inside. There, turn left, and you’ll find a wooden staircase. Go up through them and you will come across the diagram of the Enhanced Griffin Steel Sword. With that, Part 1 of the quest completes, and now we need to complete Part 2 to get the whole set’s diagram.

Part 2: Armor, Gauntlets, And Silver Sword

Okay, so you have acquired the Boots, Trousers, and Steel Swords. For the remaining Enhanced School Gear, you will have to complete Part 2 of the quest. And it will get you the Armor, Gauntlets, and the Witcher Silver Sword.

Armor

The Griffin Enhanced Armor diagram is rather easy to find. You’ll find it at the White Eagle Fort signpost. It is a makeshift came to the west of Oxenfurt Harbor. The camp will have Trollololo, a friendly Troll in it. You can find the location in the image below.

To find the diagram, all you have to do is go behind the Troll. There, to the left of the Troll’s Shack, you will find a chest. The Chest will contain the Diagram of the Enhanced Griffin Armor.

Gauntlets

For the Gauntlets, you will have to be prepared to fight a bunch of Wraiths. So, head to the Frischlow, which is in the southwestern part of Velen. Furthermore, you can reach it from Olena’s Grove by heading to the Southwest. You can check out its location on the map down below.

Once you get there, you will have to fight a bunch of wraiths. Clear them out using the Yrden spell and then head to the Village’s Southern part. There, you will find a cemetery. In that cemetery, you will find a Noonwraith. It will be level 18, so make sure that you are properly equipped to take care of it. 

Once you have defeated the Noonwraith, you can go and get the Diagram. For that, you’ll have to go to a cave. The Cave will be blocked by rocks, and you will have to use Aard on it. With that, the path will be cleared, and you can head toward the chest and get the Enhanced Griffin Gauntlets diagram.

Silver Sword

The Enhanced Silver Sword is located in an unnamed cave. The Cave is found to the east of the Crossroads signpost. If you haven’t found the Crossroads signpost, it is to the south of the Ancient Oak in the Southern Velen. Furthermore, you can check the picture down below to confirm its location.

If you have made the Contract: Patrol Gone Missing, then you will eventually get to the cave if you keep on investigating. Anyways, when you get here, Geralt will say that it’s a Ghoul’s nest. As you go inside, you will find the dead bodies of the soldiers. Near these bodies, you will find a chest that will contain the Diagram of the Enhanced Griffin Silver Sword.

Crafting Ingredients And Effects

With all the diagrams ready at hand, you can now get them crafted. For that, you will have to find Journeymen level Armorer and Blacksmith. You can also use the same Armorer and BLacksmith that you used to get Basic Griffin School Gear crafted. They can craft the Enhanced Equipment set too.

You’ll need a bunch of different Ingredients with the Enhanced School Gear. In addition to that, you will need the Basic Griffin School Gear to make it. It will be the main ingredient to equip the newer set. So your first objective should be to get it handy. Once you have it, you can head on to find all of the ingredients that will be required for crafting. We’ll list them below.

The armor set’s stats, as well as the effects, will upgrade. Although the Stats depend on the Craftsmen and your level, the effects don’t change with your or the Craftsmen’s level. So, we will list the effects of each of the School Gear pieces with their ingredients.

Griffin Armor

The Enhanced Griffin Armor is the main piece of the Armor set

Ingredients

It will require the following ingredients to craft.

When upgraded, here’s what its effects will look like.

Griffin Trouser

Then if we go to the Enhanced Griffin Trousers, here’s what is required.

Griffin Steel Sword

The Enhanced Griffin Steel Sword has much better stats than the previous one.

It requires the following Ingredients to craft the Enhanced Steel Sword.

• 2x Dark Steel Ingot
• 1x Powdered Monster Tissue
• 1x Monster Claw

Effects

With the upgrade, you get the following effects.

• +10% Sign Intensity.
• +5% Human and Non-Human Bonus experience.

Griffin Silver Sword

When you upgrade the Griffin Silver Sword, it becomes the Enhanced Griffin Silver Sword.

Ingredients

Here are the Ingredients you’ll need.

• 1x Griffin Silver Sword
• 2x Leather Straps
• 2x Meteorite Silver Ingot
• 1x Monster Egg
• 1x Monster Tongue

Effects

When it is upgraded, it’ll have the following effects.

• +10% Sign Intensity.
• +20% Monsters Bonus experience.

Superior Griffin Gear

With the Enhanced Griffin Gear acquired, you can either sit back and wait for it to become useless. Or work towards upgrading it to Superior Griffin School Gear which will eventually make it a lot more useful for you in Witcher 3. But remember, you can’t make Superior Griffin School Gear without getting the Enhanced Griffin School Gear. So you will have to complete everything mentioned above before you can get here.

With that being said, you will have to first get the quest for the Superior level Gear. That is the Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Gear Part 3. To get the quest, you will first have to head toward Novigrad. In Novigrad, go to Hierarch Square, which is in the heart of the city. It is a Square in the city. Once there, you need to look for the Armorer in the area. If you can’t find this specific Armorer, we’ll put an image of the location down below.

Once there, you can buy the 3rd Edwin Greloff map and get the quest. Make sure that you equip the right quest, that is, the ‘Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Gear Part 3’. Once you have that, you need to head towards The Skellige Isles. There, you will have location markers for all of the diagrams, and there you can find them.

Steel Sword

First, we’ll head towards An Skellig island. It is a small island located to the North East of the main Island. The location where the diagram is is to the west of the highest mountain on the island. But, it will be better to go to the Urialla Harbor signpost and go from there to the top right of the island. We’ll have its location to make it easier for you to know where it is.

Once you get there, you’ll be attacked by a bunch of Bandits. Now, these are level 24 Bandits, so you will have to be careful when you’re dealing with them. Make sure that you have improved your playstyle and know how to take on a bunch of high-level enemies at that point. Well, your gameplay should have improved by that point because it is a level 18 Island.

Anyways, once you have defeated these enemies, head ahead, and you will find a rock shrine. Behind the shrine will be the chest containing the diagram of the Superior Griffin Steel Sword.

Armor Set

Now, for the Armor Set, you need to go to the Main Island, which is the Ard Skellig. There, head towards the Northeastern part of the island, specifically near the Giants’ Toes signpost. The location is fairly easy to find as can be seen in the picture below.

Once you get to the signpost, head to the North, and you will come across a bunch of Bandits. These Bandits will be level 24 and will be fairly easy to deal with. You should have gained experience on how to deal with them from the bandits that you defeated for the Superior Steel Sword. Defeat them and head to the campfire. The chest should be by the rocks, which will constrain diagrams of Superior Armor, Trousers, Gauntlets, and Boots.

Silver Sword

Lastly, for the Silver Sword, you need to head toward the Elverum Lighthouse. The Elverum Lighthouse is on the southernmost tip of the main island, that is Ard Skellig. Once you get there, you don’t need to head towards the lighthouse but to a nearby cave. The cave is located to the North West of the Elverum Lighthouse. We’ll have its location down below.

Once you get there, you need to head inside the cave. The cave is rather big, but it is unmarked. Keep heading inside until you come at a split. At that point, you need to turn right and then continue on the path. You will get to a room at the end with a Tomb. There, behind the Tomb, will be a Chest with the Superior Griffin Silver Sword Diagram.

Crafting Ingredients And Effects

With all of the Diagrams ready, you can head towards any Journeymen Armorer and Blacksmith. You can get it crafted at the Journeymen, which you used to craft the previous armors too.

With that, we have prepared the list of Ingredients that you’ll need to craft each of the Superior Armor sets. Remember, for the Superior Griffin School Gear, and you’ll need to have its previous version, the Enhanced School Gear, ready. Without it, you won’t be able to get the Superior upgrade.

Griffin Armor

The Superior Griffin Armor has these items required.

Collect the following Ingredients to make the Armor piece.

• 2x Dimetrium Plate
• 1x Monster Hide
• 2x Monster Hear

If you only have the base game, then the Mastercrafted Griffin Gear is the last upgrade that you’ll get with the School Gear. With the Mastercrafted, your School Gear will be at the highest level. But if you have the DLC Blood & Wine, then it won’t be the last upgrade that you can do to that specific Griffin School Gear.

For that, you’ll have to buy the 4th Edwin Greloff map from Eibhear Hattori. He is a master-level Blacksmith in Novigrad. He’s found in the Glory Lane district of the city. Buy the 4th map in Witcher 3, which will start the ‘Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Gear Part 4’ quest. In the quest, you’ll find the Mastercrafted diagrams of the School Gear. For that, you will again have to travel to The Skellige Isles.

Griffin Silver Sword

First off, we’ll start at the main Island in the Skellige isles region, that is Ard Skellig island. For the Griffin Mastercrafted Silver Sword, we’ll begin in the center of the Island at the Fornhala signpost. Fornhala is an abandoned village, and from there, you need to head east, across the lake, to the abandoned fortress known as the Kaer Dhu. We’ll have the fortress’s location on the map below.

While you’re going there, you might get attacked by a Level 20 Griffin. The best strategy here is to keep running toward the fortress. When you’re in the water, submerge as long as you can to save yourself from its attacks. Or, if you’re confident enough, you can go on and attack it. Make sure that you don’t end up dying in the process. Once you get to the fortress, go inside, and directly to the left, you’ll find a chest. It will contain the diagram of the Mastercrafted Silver Sword.

Griffin Steel Sword

The diagram of the Mastercrafted Griffin Steel Sword is also located at the center of the main Island of Ard Skellig. You need to go to the destroyed village of Boxholm. If you can’t find it, look to the southeast of Fayrlund and Rannvaig. Furthermore, you can check the map below to check its location.

Once you get there, you need to head east. There, you’ll find ruins of a Watchtower. Keep heading east until you find a small wall. Climb onto it and go a little to the North. There, a chest will be under some wooden planks. Open it and you will find the diagram of the Mastercrafted Griffin Steel Sword.

Griffin Armor Set

And For the Armor, pieces are all found at the same location. To get them, you’ll have to travel to the North East of the main island. The chest will be found in ruins. These ruins are to the Southeast of the Whale Graveyard signpost and the Northeast of the Redgill signpost. The ruins are near the coastline, so wherever you start, just stay near the coastline. Check the Map screenshot below to get the exact location.

Once you get there, you can either go and fight the Cyclops. Now it is a formidable opponent, so you will have to be careful when fighting it. You’ll have to be careful throughout the fight not to get hit, as that can have you get killed. It will be quite hard to defeat. But, once you have defeated it, you can head inside the ruins near the Griffin Marker. In ruins, you’ll find the chest in the room with the place of power.

If you don’t want to fight the level 30 Cyclops, you can climb onto the platform to the right. Keep climbing until you find a doorway. Head inside, and it will be the room with a place of power. Near it, you will find two chests, one of which will contain the Diagrams of the Armor set.

Grandmaster Griffin School Gear

The Grandmaster Griffin School Gear won’t be available in the base game of Witcher 3. It is only available if you have acquired the DLC Blood and Wine. That is because you can acquire the quest from Lazare Lafargue. He is the only Grandmaster Armorer and Blacksmith in the whole game, including all the DLCs. You can get Grandmaster-level armor and weapons crafted from him right from the beginning.

Lazare is found in The Duchy of Toussaint in Witcher 3. It is a high-level region in the game, where you need to be at least level 35 to survive. Once you have killed the Bandits, head to the marker for the quest; there, you will find a stone wall. Interact with it to dispel the illusion. That will reveal a pathway to the castle’s underground parts. There, you will find a Workshop that will have a Power Crystal on its table. Then, go to the next room and use the Witcher Senses to find a hidden button on the wall. That will open up the door.

There, you will find a place to put the Power Crystal in. Then use Aard to activate the Crystal. It will open a portal. Head inside the Portal, and you will find a Golem ready to attack you. Defeat the Golem and then you can explore the area to loot all of the diagrams. You will find the Trousers diagram on the Chair. At the same time, the Armor diagram is near the Stove. Lastly, the Silver Sword is on the table.
