Speaking in an interview with Natalie, Hideo Kojima revealed that if he is going to make a Death Stranding movie, it will be completely different from the game. Since Kojima has confirmed that he won’t be directing the film, we wonder what direction or storyline the movie might adopt. Even so, his interview made it clear that the movie would deviate from the game to make it appear more relevant from a storytelling perspective.

For those unaware, Natalie is a Japanese entertainment news website that recently featured an interview with Hideo Kojima. The interview went over various details, but at the end of it, the interviewer asked Hideo Kojima about the Death Stranding movie in the works. Kojima revealed some interesting details and gave insight into the faithfulness of the movie to the game.

Yes, if we are going to make a movie, I want it to be something that can only be done on film, so I intend to make it something completely different. I think it will be a bit of a surprise, and there may be different tastes. In the first place, games are interactive media, but a movie adaptation has to be two hours long, and fans would be happy if the lines and scenes were almost the same as the original within that limited time, but that’s it, because it would also create a lot of conflicts, such as ‘Is it really necessary to make a movie?’ So, if we are going to go to the trouble of making a movie, we are going to prepare a trick that is good (laughs),” says Hideo Kojima.

It is important to note that the interview was in Japanese, and the above statement will likely have some inaccuracies. Kojima believes that while fans would appreciate experiencing the same lines and dialogues in the movie, it would also make them question whether the movie is really necessary. Even if the core of the game remains the same, the deviation can occur in a plethora of ways.

Even while playing the game, there would be several instances where the player must wonder how it could go if a certain character made a different choice. So it is entirely possible that Kojima explores one of those choices and makes us experience the different ways the story could have ended. This concept has already been explored in adaptations like Hitman: Agent 47, Tomb Raider, and many others that are even more opposite of their games.

Death Stranding is an action game developed by Kojima Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for PlayStation 4 in 2019. It was Hideo Kojima’s first game after the split from Konami and became very popular. The game and the director’s cut version were later released on PlayStation 5 and PC. A macOS version is also scheduled to release, but the data has not been announced yet.
