Santa Monica Studio, the famed developer behind the God of War games, has probably dropped the biggest gift for its player base in recent times, revealing the first-ever expansion for God of War Ragnarok — the latest game in the franchise — while labeling its free-to-play. In 2023, such acts of courage and selflessness are rare in the gaming industry. Watch the DLC’s latest launch trailer ahead.
It’s not just all cinematics and flash like regular launch trailers in the case of God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla. The devs have switched things up by detailing some of the things that players can expect from the now-released DLC. For starters, exploring Valhalla is going to serve as a major part of the expansion, followed by the seemingly “reimagined combat” building upon the already excellent mechanics of the game.
From what we can gauge so far, Valhalla, being a roguelite DLC, will let players choose between one of two power-ups from time to time, pretty much like other titles belonging to this genre. Santa Monica posted a tweet earlier on X (formerly Twitter), showcasing how this would play out in the added content. Keep in mind that these “Perk Glyps” will be temporary and are bound to reset, should Kratos die.
Moving ahead, the trailer tells players that this is going to be a personal journey for Kratos as well, given how, (spoiler alert), the protagonist ended things on a good note and saw himself becoming the peacekeeper of the realms as part of the prophecy. Since Kratos turned out to be the “Champion” all along, Valhalla will see the former Ghost of Sparta exploring the matter on this front.

This is further corroborated by the developers themselves, who took to X to remark when asked whether the expansion will feature story elements, “There is story! GoWR:V serves as an epilogue to the events of God of War Ragnarök.” I personally see this as nothing short of a huge Christmas gift to the bustling fan base of the God of War series, and an act of chivalry from SMS in the day and age we live in today.
God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla was announced during this year’s The Game Awards, and has been released as of today on December 12, 2023. This is the base game’s first DLC outside of cosmetic add-ons and is set to bring a new chapter in the life of the protagonist, Kratos. eXputer reviewed Ragnarok and rated it 4.5/5, with writer Huzaifah Duranni calling it “exceptional in almost every single way.”
