God Of War Ragnarok’s Free DLC “Valhalla” Will Be Roguelite

This is the game's first-ever playable DLC.

Story Highlights

  • God of War Ragnarok is one of PlayStation’s most prized exclusives, having come out last year.
  • The game has just received DLC for the first time, and that too is totally free, called Valhalla.
  • Valhalla will arrive as a free update to the base game on December 12 with roguelite features.

There’s a reason why everyone loves Santa Monica Studio, but here’s one more. During The Game Awards 2023 live stream, the studio has come forth with a staggering announcement, revealing DLC for God of War Ragnarok in the name of Valhalla, and making it absolutely free. Additionally, the add-on content will be released on December 12, which isn’t even a week away from now. Incredible.

From the looks of it, Kratos is pursuing something close to him, thereby facing new dangers and everything of the like in the wake of doing so. The absence of Atreus — Kratos’ only heir — is noticeably apparent, and Freya, who vowed to stay by the Ghost of Sparta’s side is seemingly missing as well. That said, what’s present is the return of the old God of War soundtrack, something that personally sent chills down my spine as I heard it first. Oh, the memories.

Embark with Kratos to Valhalla on a deeply personal and reflective journey towards a future he never thought possible. Master challenges of mind and body on an unraveling adventure that blends the beloved combat from God of War Ragnarök with brand new elements inspired by the roguelite genre,” reads the DLC’s description.

Now, the most interesting part in all this is that Valhalla has taken inspiration from the roguelite genre, and will feature elements pertaining to this category. The PlayStation blog post sheds more light on the matter, saying, “Kratos must cast off his armor and equipment, and instead build towards both per-attempt and permanent rewards.” Talk about insane replayability value to boot and a first for the franchise.

Rumors concerning Ragnarok DLC have been spiraling the wild as far back as March this year, when Tyr’s voice actor let out a subtle tease during PAX East 2023, leading many to believe that something is in the brewer. Not long after that, a known industry insider said that Santa Monica is working on DLC for the title and many of us took to speculation, thinking that perhaps the expansion will focus on Atreus solely.

It bears mentioning that this is a standalone expansion, though, so you will be required to have the base God of War Ragnarok game installed on your PlayStation console. The title of the YouTube video iterates “PS4” as well, so I presume players on this platform are good to go as well, right alongside those who are on the latest PlayStation 5.

God of War Ragnarok was released on November 9, 2022, for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 exclusively. In eXputer’s review, the game received a 4.5/5 rating, with Huzaifah Durrani remarking, “Ragnarok is exceptional in almost every single way, whether it’s the bone-chilling soundtrack, heartfelt yet gut-punching storytelling, or the extremely satisfying combat.”
