Hades 2 Is A Completely Standalone Project; Has Been In Development For Three Years

The title is still slated to release in early access for Q2 2024.

Story Highlights

  • As per Hades developer Greg Kasavin, the sequel will be standalone. You will not need to play the first title.
  • Hades 2 has been in development without any setbacks for three years. Early access is planned for Q2 2024.
  • The first title was well-received for featuring fun roguelike mechanics with a compelling gameplay loop.

In an interview with the Portuguese site Jovem Nerd, a major Hades dev Greg Kasavin has confirmed that the upcoming sequel will be completely standalone. In other words, players will not have to exhaust hours to play the first title just for the sake of enjoying the next one. However, not much detail about the differences has been clarified. Greg said that Hades 2 features many similar elements but has been designed to be its own entity.

Hades 2 is a direct sequel that is created from many elements of the first game. […] But it’s important to us that it’s something standalone. You can play the second game without having played the first,” said Kasavin in the interview.

I believe that Hades 2 will likely share a separate story that does not directly tie in with the first one. However, we can expect the same level of ingenuity —if not more— in the upcoming roguelike. Greg also reiterated that their next project will go into early access for the anticipated fans sometime in Q2 2024, likely between April and June. We can expect to hear about a specific release window soon.

Hades Is An Indie Gem With Indelible Gameplay

The prominent ARPG Hades took the world by storm soon after its release. It was met with a critical reception from fans and sold over a million copies soon after release. The addictive roguelike elements mixed with an interesting story resulted in the indie almost becoming the top best-rated game on Steam. It currently stands at the fifth place.
