Story Highlights
- Marcus Lehto, art director on the original Halo trilogy, says Campaign Evolved’s redesigned ring is “out of scale, no mystery, damn ugly.”
- He argues the Forerunner ring should look ancient and sinister, not like it “was built a few years ago.”
- Lehto also notes the remake’s main menu drops the Milky Way from the ring’s background, altering the original’s lore-based framing.
The Ring Looks New. That’s The Problem.
Marcus Lehto, who served as art director on Halo: Combat Evolved and its two direct sequels and is often called the “father of Master Chief,” has taken to X to criticize the redesigned Halo ring in Halo: Campaign Evolved.

Posting a side-by-side comparison of the ring’s exterior in the original and the remake, Lehto argued the new version loses the sense of scale and age that defined the original. “While Forerunner tech was metal (not stone), it was also ancient, vast, alive, and a tomb to the horrors that lurked within,” he wrote.
“It had seen hundreds of millennia of conflict. Yet the game shows it as shiny metal that looks like it was built a few years ago.”
He went further in a follow-up post, directly targeting the ring as it appears in the game’s main menu. “The main menu ring is the most offensive thing we see every time we boot up the game,” he wrote.
“It should feel massive, dark, mysterious, sinister, but also full of wonder. This new ring looks like a shiny new toy – out of scale, no mystery, damn ugly.”
In a subsequent reply to a fan, Lehto added that the redesign “lacks all the micro detail that should give it the epic scale it deserves,” and that it “needs to feel like an ancient tomb.”
Even The Background Changed
Lehto’s criticism extends beyond the ring’s surface texture to how the scene around it was framed. In a third post, he pointed out a lore-specific detail: “for the lore, the ring in CE resides far out on the fringe of the Milky Way galaxy, which we see in the background.” (reference image pasted above)
Lehto’s broader point is that these choices look less like technical limitations and more like a newer team not fully grasping the intent behind the original art direction. That said, his criticism isn’t blanket. He’s also praised other aspects of the remake’s visual work, agreeing with a fan that the Covenant and Flood designs “felt wonderful throughout.”
Part Of A Rockier Launch
Lehto’s comments land during what’s already been a mixed run for Halo: Campaign Evolved. The remake reportedly ranked just 29th among PS5 active users despite topping the PlayStation Store’s best-seller chart, and separate estimates suggest Call of Duty’s decade-old Black Ops ports outsold it on PS5 by roughly 32 to 1.
Whether Lehto’s specific critique of the ring’s art direction reflects a wider player sentiment or just one influential voice from the franchise’s past remains to be seen, but it adds another point of friction to a launch that’s already drawn scrutiny from multiple directions.
