The title has suffered many mishaps during development that have fueled the initial rumors.

Story Highlights

  • The Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake is listed to be in the brewer for the PlayStation 5 and PC in the report, suggesting that the entry was not canceled internally.
  • The CEO was asked about the project during the recent investors call, but a sarcastic reply followed by “no further comments” did not give any new info to the fans.
  • The original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic came out in 2003 for the original Xbox, and it also later arrived on PC and mobile platforms. It also received a sequel.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake has been in development for three years, and it has trekked through many ups and downs. Things have started to look bleak for the enticing entry sadly since a few years ago, largely because of the silence concerning the awaited project and the lingering rumors that have suggested that it was internally canceled. However, a new official exertion has shattered the growing fables in the industry.

Embracer Group recently released its Q4 and full year report, where it jotted down all of the games that have been in development. The report features a section that describes all games both released and in the “as of May 24, 2023.” Alongside other entries like Relic Hunter Legends, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine II, and Remnant 2, the KOTOR remake is also included in the large list of projects.

On page 11, the KOTOR remake is listed to be in the development for the PlayStation 5 and PC. Hence, the report confirms that it is still in development despite earlier rumors suggesting that it was canned behind the scenes.

The KOTOR remake was originally announced in September 2021 during the PlayStation Showcase event, garnering hype and anticipation from long-time Star Wars fans that considered the original Knights of the Old Republic to be the best entry in the franchise. The CEO was questioned about the project during the recent investors call, but a sarcastic reply followed by “no further comments” did not give any new info to the fans.

The CEO’s sarcastic reply does suggest that the KOTOR remake was internally canceled or is currently stuck in development hell. Regardless, the recent evidence from the report confirms that the team is still toiling hard in developing the game despite all the impediments hindering the progress. We may hear something new in the upcoming twenty-year anniversary of the original game in two months, but only time can answer that in the end.

All in all, we know the enigmatic KOTOR remake is still in the brewer for the PlayStation 5 and PC, but no release window currently exists. We may have a Dead Island 2 situation on our hands if the remake is stuck in the abyss of development hell since that entry spent nearly a decade in development. At the very least, some light rays can be seen at the end of the tunnel, giving hope to the wistful fans waiting to play KOTOR through the modern lens.

The original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic came out in 2003 for the original Xbox, and it also later arrived on PC and mobile platforms. The series has also seen sequels. In relevant news, some buried assets from a canceled RTS Star Wars project were found recently. The unnamed entry was in the pre-production phase over ten years ago, but it never got to see the light of day.
