Why Does Wolverine’s Suit Heal Itself In Marvel’s Wolverine? Insomniac Explains

It's less about mutant nanomachines and more about not wanting Logan running around in shredded rags for half the game.

Story Highlights

  • Wolverine’s suit visibly repairing itself became a talking point after June’s State of Play reveal.
  • Insomniac says the choice comes down to gameplay practicality, not an in-universe explanation.
  • The studio still built a detailed damage system for combat, including real-time blood physics.

Insomniac’s Reasoning Leaned Towards Practicality

Wolverine’s suit visibly healing itself alongside his body was one of the biggest talking points to come out of June’s State of Play reveal for Marvel’s Wolverine, drawing reactions ranging from “NANOMACHINES, SON” jokes to fan theories about Reed Richards secretly being involved.

Speaking to IGN, Insomniac head of technology Mike Fitzgerald and senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed confirmed there’s no deep lore explanation behind it at all. “I think mostly there’s some practicalities to it,” Fitzgerald said.

“You can’t play through most of the game wearing just shredded rags on his body. So we find the right balance between clothing that reflects the gameplay you’re doing and this brutal combat and the realities of that, and then finding the right moments to have it restore itself so you get that right cinematic feel of Wolverine.”

Reiner-Reed said the studio arrived at that solution after testing the alternative. “Early on you would be playing through missions and your clothes are shredded for way too long,” she said. “You don’t feel as powerful as you’re playing through. So yeah, we definitely found that right balance was the right thing to say.”

It’s a fair trade-off given how Wolverine’s combat works. His healing factor means taking heavy damage is part of the design rather than something to avoid, so a suit that actually stayed torn up would likely leave him running around half naked within minutes of any real fight.

Marvel’s Wolverine Uses Real-time Blood Splatter

Even with the suit resetting between story beats, Insomniac still built a full damage pipeline to sell the brutality of combat in the moment. “We invested a lot in how damage is reflected on him in his suit, on enemies and their suits,” Fitzgerald explained. That extends well past the suit itself.

“As you attack them, the blood sprays coming off them are some really interesting fluid tech. So it’s not just pre-baked visual effects. These are actual blood particles coming out. They hit the ground and make the exact splatter mark they would make if they land on Logan. They leave blood there. If he walks through water, it washes off and leaves blood swirls in the water.”

Marvel’s Wolverine is set to launch on PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026, giving Insomniac’s take on Logan a hard release date after years of limited updates since the game’s 2021 announcement.
