DOOM is one of the most popular video game franchises in the world. It’s responsible for shaping the first-person shooter genre as we know it today. The game has been in trend since the 90s, starting with the first DOOM, which is available literally everywhere. From movies to comics, the franchise has spread out a lot. With the success of the recent reboots, it’s safe to say that this series will have a long life. However, there was a time when the DOOM franchise wasn’t doing as well and the highlight of that period is the cancelled DOOM 4.
Recently, a few leaked images surfaced online, showcasing a soldier from the cancelled DOOM 4 (thanks, @Runhob). We can see a full body shot of a Resistance soldier variant that would have been present in the game. A few different renditions of the soldier are visible in these leaked images. According to @Runhob, these images were going to be in the trailer of DOOM 4 that Blur Studio was producing for id Software and this soldier build is likely from that very production.

Let's hope for the original Doom 4 1.0 build/unreleased marketing to surface out in order to discover more of its unexplored content!#DOOM #DOOM4 #LostMedia pic.twitter.com/oK3u6fEFjk— Crispies (DOOM 4 Fan & Archivist) (@Runhob) April 5, 2022
These renders are a remarkable discovery because they hint at a plot rumor for the game. Around the time of DOOM 4, there were many rumors that suggested that the players would be able to play from the perspective of the soldiers. Instead of playing as the protagonist that we see in the reboots, players would be playing as a common soldier trying to survive the hellish landscape. Hence, these leaked images may be a nod to this premise for the unreleased game.
However, as we know, this intriguing concept did not see the light of day. After being announced at QuakeCon in 2007, DOOM 4 ran into many roadblocks in its development. It never really got off the ground and was in development misery for several years. Eventually, Bethesda Softworks intervened and scrapped everything from this production to move in a new direction. The result was DOOM released in 2016, so it’s safe to say the company made the right decision.
It’s rather common for games to be cancelled by developers, so DOOM 4 getting cancelled is nothing new. While these leaked images may not be massive news for many, they still give players some insight as to what the game would’ve been like if it did exist at the moment. Hopefully, we get to see even more content from the cancelled game in the future.
