Sega Confirms Like a Dragon Gaiden’s English Dub Will Be Added Post-Launch

English-only players will have to wait a bit longer for the dub.

                                                                             Story Highlights

  • Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name is an upcoming action beat-em-up published by Sega and developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios.
  • Sega has confirmed that Like a Dragon Gaiden will launch without an English dub, which will be added via a post-launch update for free.
  • Yong Yea, the voice actor for the main character Kazuma Kiryu, has also suggested that the upcoming Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is still aiming for a simultaneous Japanese and English dub release.

Sega has confirmed that the upcoming Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, will only include the Japanese dub, with the English dub added as a post-launch update. The news was further corroborated by voice actor Yong Yea who voices main character Kiryu Kazuma in the English dub of the game. Sega also has not announced any specific date for the release of the English dub.

This might come as a surprise to series fans as Judgment, its sequel Lost Judgment, and Yakuza Like a Dragon, all released with both their English and Japanese dubs at launch. As such, this is the first time in the series where the English dub isn’t available at launch. A follow-up tweet by Yong Yea suggests that according to Steam listings, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth will indeed have a simultaneous release for both the Japanese and English dubs

This is also not Yong Yea’s first role in the series. Previously he has voiced Dr. Shirakaba, a central character in Lost Judgment’s expansion pack: The Kaito Files. Yong Yea also confirmed that despite not being a numbered entry in the series, Like a Dragon Gaiden is still a must-play entry in the series, especially for players who want to get the full picture of Kazuma Kiryu’s character arc.

The Yakuza/Like a Dragon series didn’t start receiving English dubs until the release of Fist of The North Star: Lost Paradise, which was a Yakuza spin-off game set in the universe of the manga/anime Fist of The North Star or Hokuto no Ken in Japanese. After that, however, every game in the series (except Like a Dragon Ishin for obvious reasons) has received a simultaneous English dub.

Like a Dragon Gaiden
Kiryu’s signature Yakuza style in Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name.

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name is a prequel story that will supposedly bridge the gap between Yakuza 6 and Yakuza: Like a Dragon and show what Kazuma Kiryu was up to between these two games. Alongside this, Like a Dragon Gaiden will also set up various plot points and events that will take place in the upcoming Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth which is set to release in January next year.

Like a Dragon Gaiden will launch on November 9 this year for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Steam
