Starfield Lead Dev Says He Hit The “Panic Button” To Add The Final Quest On Time

The former dev had great difficulty in creating the last quest of the campaign.

Story Highlights

  • Former Starfield lead quest designer Will Shen clarifies that he hit the “panic button” to timely add the final quest.
  • The collaborations between various departments weren’t always effective.

As first reported by PC Gamer, the former Starfield lead quest designer Will Shen recently appeared on stage during the GDC event and discussed the importance of cooperation in the level and quest design process. The dev recalls his time when the development of the RPG was nearly finished, yet the quest designer team still lacked a satisfying final quest. The dev attributes this to a lack of collaboration between different departments.

We were finally at a state in the project where we could play through the whole [game]. And it became very clear that we were missing the large final location that was going to tie the story together and have a satisfying action-filled payoff,” says Will Shen.

So the dev had to hit the “panic button” to deal with the dilemma about the final quest. That panic button was none other than the senior-level designer Steve Cornett who helped Shen out with the dilemma.

I was both implementing the main quest and leading the quest design team, so I had absolutely no time. The entire quest design team was already overbooked.”

Starfield Has A Lot Of Fun Elements Loosely Joined Together

Bethesda’s RPG was 8 years in the making and became the studio’s first new IP in 25 years. While it includes a myriad of fun features, the main gameplay loop has often been blamed by users for becoming repetitive and boring. The title has a “mostly negative” rating on Steam and over 97% of the players have already stopped playing the game.
