Steam Page Shows System Shock’s Release Date Pushed To 2023

The remake will not come out this year but at the start of 2023.

When creator Stephen Kick set the basis for Nightdive Studios, one of the main reasons was System Shock. The studio that now remakes old games was only built due to the original System Shock’s unavailability. After Kick was unable to buy the second game in the series, he came up with the idea of Nightdive.

Hence, it makes total sense that one of the studios’ remakes is of System Shock. This remake of the original game is probably the most ambitious project the studio has ever worked on. It has been in the works for almost 7 years now.

Nightdive Studios has made many changes during its production from shifting engines to price changes. Probably the most frequent change has been that of its release date. It has moved ahead many times and now it seems like another delay is coming.

Major Takeaways:

  • System Shock remake will release in March 2023 according to Steam.
  • The game has been delayed multiple times.
  • It also had a price increase on Steam.

System Shock remake will apparently come out in March 2023 according to the game’s Steam page. Industry insider Wario64 was the first one to report this news yesterday. As the Steam page says, the game is once again pushing ahead its release date.

The game has had to go through many speed bumps that have delayed its release during its development. First Nightdive had to collect funding for the System Shock remake from Kickstarter so they could start development. It went very well and they reached their goal before time and wanted to release the game in 2017.

But, they didn’t meet this release date as the studio decided to move System Shock to Unreal Engine 4. Afterward, in February 2018, Stephen Kick announced that the remake’s development is on hold. One of the main reasons was how it had gone from being a remake to a reboot and Nightdive needed more funding.

However, the game started development again and the project was even bigger than before. A 2020 release was on the cards according to Stephen Kick and even a demo came out on Steam in May of that year. The demo got praise from players and critics alike and the System Shock remake looked great.

During this, Tencent bought the rights to the System Shock sequels from OtherSide Entertainment. This had no impact on the remake and the 2020 release date was now late 2021. Nightdive updated the demo of the game that year but could not meet the release date, again.

System Shock remake got pushed into 2022 as the studio partnered with Prime Matter to release the game. After that, we didn’t get any release window and this is the first anyone has heard of this new delay. Hopefully, the game will finally release in March 2023 and not suffer any more delays.
