Call of Duty Devs Are Annoyed At Christopher Judge’s Joke From TGA ’23

Maybe the industry needs to start reconfiguring its priorities.

Story Highlights

  • Christoper Judge, the voice of Kratos, cracked a joke about Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 at TGA 2023.
  • The joke referenced a meme based on Judge due to his prolonged speech at TGA last year.
  • Several COD developers expressed their frustration in light of the game’s strained development cycle.

Update: Some of the developers who posted against the Kratos VA have since deleted their posts online.

Call of Duty developers have taken to social media to Christopher Judge’s jab from this year’s The Game Awards and spoiler alert, they aren’t pleased. During his speech before presenting the award for Best Performance of Neil Newbon, Judge cracked a joke that attacked Modern Warfare 3’s campaign while embracing his meme from last year’s event.

Associate Art Director at Treyarch, Nelson Plumey took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to write: “Imagine having short user engagement once your game is consumed. Can’t relate.” Several people in the tweet’s replies talked about how the comparison of a multiplayer title to a single-player, story-driven game is fundamentally flawed. Others expressed how one should be able to take a joke.

What Did Judge Do To Earn The Ire Of Call Of Duty Devs?

In 2022, Christopher won the same award he presented to Neil for his performance as Kratos. What followed his victory was a speech that dragged on to the point of seeming as if it would never end. About that he said, “I’m not going to stand up here, making long speeches. I’m going to stick to the script. No eight-minute speech like last year.

What followed after was quite out of the blue as he went to “roast” Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s playtime saying, “But fun fact, my speech was actually longer than this year’s Call of Duty campaign.” The joke concluded with a witty remark from Judge saying that’s another company he’ll never work for. Unsurprisingly, it sparked a negative response from developers who’ve been involved with the billion-dollar franchise, past and present.
