Minecraft Possibly The Most Successful Video Game Franchise Of All Time

In 2020 alone, the iconic game generated more than $1.1 billion in revenue.

It’s no secret that Minecraft is one of the most famous video games of all time. The game was fully released by the Swedish developer, Mojang Studios, in November 2011 and has since only gone up from there. As of 2021, the game has more than 140 million active players across all platforms that it’s available on and has sold more than 200 million copies. So, it may come as no surprise that Minecraft has seen yet another dominant year in terms of revenue from sales in 2020.

Earlier today, Austin Joseph, the current Product Marketing Manager at Xbox Game Studios, updated his LinkedIn profile with a few details about his current and former job. In one of his job descriptions for the Product Marketing Manager position at Xbox Game Studios, he mentioned that he had previously worked on the Minecraft franchise and stated all the details about what’d he’d done while he was there. Particularly, he stated that Minecraft is the most successful video game franchise of all time and that the game generated more than $1.1 billion in revenue, in 2020.

“Minecraft is the most successful video game franchise of all time. The franchise has sold over 200M copies and earned over $1.1B in 2020,” he mentioned in the description for the job. He also stated that the company executed its “most successful sale in Minecraft history” with its Winter Promo that received more than 10 million downloads, over 112 million monthly active players, and generated more than $2.1 million in revenue from microtransactions alone. For now, this a rumour despite a Microsoft Corporation official saying this, primarily because other franchises, like Pokémon, Mario, Call of Duty, and FIFA have had massive amounts of generated revenue before. This can be seen under Wikipedia results, too.

He also mentioned his other achievements with Xbox Game Studios while he was working on Minecraft, including the revenue generated by a community of more than a hundred content creators under his digital marketing training and the sweepstakes conducted for Minecraft’s 10th anniversary, which resulted in a significant increase of engagement for the game’s social media accounts.

Austin Joseph is still the Product Marketing Manager at Xbox Game Studios. However, his work has moved on from Minecraft particularly to the growth of Microsoft’s subscription-based service, the Xbox Game Pass. So, we will probably be hearing more from him regarding Xbox Game Studios in the future. His LinkedIn profile also has more than 1,000 followers with over 500 connections, so it seems authentic, too.

Considering the massive success of Minecraft over the past decade, it makes sense for it to be the most successful video game franchise of all time. In 2014, Microsoft Corporation acquired Mojang Studios along with the Minecraft franchise for $2.5 billion and the purchase was certainly worth it for the company, as the franchise continues to gain more success.
