Sony Is Metacritic’s Publisher Of The Year

Sony Interactive Entertainment's total points were 338.4.

Story Highlights

  • Sony Interactive Entertainment has gotten the number one position at Metacritic’s 13th Annual Game Publisher Rankings. Last year the company was bested by Microsoft.
  • They were given an average meta score of 85.6, whereas the total points were 338.4.
  • From the 15 products scored, they received a 100% good and 0% bad.

In Metacritic’s 13th Annual Game Publisher Rankings, Sony Interactive Entertainment has bagged the first spot, thereby getting crowned as the publisher of the year, with an average Metascore of 85.6 for its 2022 releases. Interestingly just last year, the company had been neck to neck with Microsoft and had secured second place. On the second spot this year, Paradox Interactive has been brought into the spotlight.

Microsoft, unfortunately, was not even included in the selection list. Metacritic had this to say about why this is so, “By releasing an atypically low four distinct scored titles, falling one title short of our five-game cutoff.”

When rating publishers, four factors are used. These include:

  •  Average Metascore for all games released in 2022
  •  % of scored products with good reviews
  •  % of scored products with bad reviews
  •  Number of “great” titles

Keeping all of this in mind, Sony got an average meta score of 85.6 which makes sense considering the fact that Sony has released only released good games and no bad ones. Although Sony in 2022 had been focusing primarily on sequels and ports, each and every one of them had hit the mark. One title the ranking paid heavy emphasis on was God of War Ragnarok.

The game has won numerous awards and has been nominated for plenty more. In fact, in 2020 and 2021, God of War: Ragnarok was nominated as one of the most anticipated titles, and in 2022, it won The Game Award for Best Performance. After the game’s first week of release, it was able to dominate the Italian and European charts.

God of War Ragnarok was able to make the company over 9.6 billion dollars in revenue, making it one of the most profitable titles to be released. Sony Interactive Entertainment also published the popular racing game Gran Turismo 7, which was able to secure the award of The Game Award for Best Sports/Racing Game. Due to the popularity of the game and the effort Sony had put into Gran Turismo 7, it managed to get the number one position in Germany and France.

In 2022, Sony also partnered with Epic Games to bring popular titles such as Fortnite to the PlayStation platform with exclusive content. Through this partnership, numerous clips of Unreal Engine 5 graphics being used on PlayStation 5 were seen. Sony, over the last year, has also acquired numerous studios. These include Housemarque, Nixxes Software, and Bluepoint Games.

Due to this, the company has been able to increase Sony’s first-party development capabilities massively. According to Metacritic, Sony has one of the highest-rated first-party games. Sony has shown remarkable progress and success in the gaming industry, as exemplified by its top position in Metacritic’s 13th Annual Game Publisher Rankings.

The company’s consistent focus on delivering high-quality games, strategic partnerships, and studio acquisitions have led to its continued growth and success. Throughout the last year, Sony has once again demonstrated its ability to create engaging and profitable games that captivate audiences worldwide. As the gaming industry continues to evolve and grow, it will be exciting to see what Sony has in store for the future.
