Mojang
Mojang, a Stockholm-based Swedish indie studio, was founded 14 years ago in 2009. The studio was founded by Markus Persson. Markus Persson, himself an independent game programmer and designer, created it for the sole purpose of developing a sandbox game now known as Minecraft.
Founded as Mojang Specifications, the studio had inherited the name from a different game-developing studio Markus had co-founded and subsequently left. At first, Markus was the sole member of Mojang. He used to work a full-time day job and would work on developing the game in his free time.
He released the alpha version of Minecraft in 2009, which became the catalyst for Mojang’s initial rise to fame. The earnings allowed Markus to leave the day job and along with a friend of his from his days at King.com formally founded Mojang.
From 2010 to 2013 Mojang grew expeditiously owing to the success of Minecraft. But as the studio grew so did the responsibilities of Markus. Ultimately, he decided to sell his studio. He was approached by several big gaming studios. But in the end, it was Microsoft whose bid of $ 2.5 billion came out at the top.
As Xbox Studio’s subsidiary, Mojang released multiple Minecraft spin-off games. The studio has also published several games. The studio has seen a notable increase in its workforce, with more than 600 people employed as of 2021. To stay up to date with more news on Mojang, stay tuned to eXputer.
