Rockstar Games recently announced Red Dead Redemption and the Undead Nightmare expansion coming to PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, including backward compatibility with the PlayStation 5. Since fans had hoped for a remaster or remake on several platforms, including PC, this conversion port has been dubbed “lazy” and overpriced. As such, the studio is under severe backlash over the recent announcement.

The Red Dead Redemption announcement came with much disappointment from the fans. One of the main reasons for that is because, for a long time, there had been rumours that it would be a remaster, coming to PC along with Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 & 5. Instead, fans are left with a port they consider “lazy” with no PC version and a $50 price tag.
In a new conversion by Double Eleven Studios, the Switch and PS4 versions bring the two classic experiences together again for both new players and original fans to enjoy across modern consoles, including backwards compatibility with the PlayStation 5,” says Rockstar Games.
One may consider that there is a silver lining for PlayStation fans since they can play it on PS4 and PS5 via backward compatibility. But it is important to note that hardly anyone would be willing to pay $50 for a conversion port. In any case, this could be bad for the series since no matter how well the re-release performs; it would be considered negative for either the franchise or Rockstar Games.
The dilemma with the #RedDeadRedemption port:
• If it does well, it shows that publishers can get away with $50 lazy ports.
• If it doesn’t do well we will likely never see a remake of the game.

Ultimately, Rockstar Games may have made a terrible decision that could cost them many fans. But it’s not the first time the studio has made decisions that upset the Red Dead Redemption community. Last year, Rockstar Games revealed that it had steadily shifted Red Dead Online resources onto the next iteration in the Grand Theft Auto series.

The franchise has long been suffering from content drought, and this supposed remaster could have been a wonderful thing for fans and a great way to revitalize the series. Instead, it seems like this announcement could be a nail in the coffin for hopes that fans had developed over the past few months. It is a sad day, especially when the top posts on r/reddeadredemption all discuss that no one should buy this port.
