The Original Red Dead Redemption Gets Rated In Korea Out Of Nowhere

The new rating is nothing short of a surprise.

Story Highlights

  • The Original Red Dead Redemption has received a new rating in Korea from the Game Rating and Administration Committee. The rating was filed recently on June 15, 2023.
  • The classification number of the rating suggests that it’s for consoles. As per the rating, a new remaster project could be in development, alluding to many rumors that have existed over the years.
  • Previous rumors have suggested that a Red Dead Redemption remake was in development, but it was eventually canceled due to the GTA Trilogy getting a terrible reception after the release.
  • Red Dead Redemption 1 was released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2010, spanning back two console generations and thirteen years ago.

Just when no one was suspecting, and gamers had given up hope, Red Dead Redemption 1 remaster rumors sprouted entirely anew. The barren land of fables has seen new activity because the original RDR1 has received a new rating in Korea. Korea’s Game Rating and Administration Committee issued a new rating filed on June 15, 2023, for the Rockstar project on its site, teasing that an RDR1 remaster project could be secretly in the brewer.

As noticed by Gematsu, the rating only appears to be for consoles due to the classification number featuring “NV.” NV refers to console games in Korea, while NP is used for PC games. Regardless, the rating for the console version only does not entail that there would be no Red Dead Redemption remake for the PC version. Sadly, the new rating does not give us any more information to draw out a concrete conclusion.

It would make sense for the remaster to appear on all devices, but no other evidence other than the new rating suggests that a remaster is in the brewer. On the other hand, the developer Rockstar Games has also adopted a silent approach regarding the project. Thus, it is best to take the new rating with a grain of salt until Rockstar steps in with some official information regarding the potential Red Dead Redemption 1 remake.

It is worth noting that the rumors about the original Red Dead Redemption getting a remaster has existed for nearly half a decade, with previous evidence even suggesting that it was in development at one point. According to rumors started by the notable Rockstar Magazine, the title would have resembled the GTA Trilogy instead of being a complete remaster, including visual changes and upgrades.

Regardless, things took a turn for the worse soon after the rumors started spreading. A notable Rockstar Games insider, Tez2, stepped in last year on Twitter to suggest that the devs had canceled the RDR1 and Grand Theft Auto 4 remaster projects, and both titles had stayed on the table for a few years.

The main reason for the cancelation of both games was suggested to be the terrible launch of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, causing Rockstar to shelve away the other planned projects. Nevertheless, the new rating seems to suggest that the Red Dead Redemption remaster project was not canceled, after all. It would make sense for Rockstar to remaster RDR1 after it has already touched on other, much older releases.

Red Dead Redemption 1 was released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2010, spanning back two console generations and thirteen years ago at this point. The release of Red Dead Redemption 2 also caused a huge efflux in popularity, gaining new players in the millions. Many gamers have since craved to play the original Red Dead Redemption through a modern lens.
