The Red Dead Redemption Remaster Is “Real,” Claims Insider

An announcement could come in August.

Story Highlights

  • Red Dead Redemption by Rockstar San Diego is flat-out one of the best games ever made, outclassed only by its sequel Red Dead Redemption 2 which came out in 2018, 8 years after the original title.
  • In recent times, Korea’s Game Rating and Administration Committee has issued a new rating for the first Red Dead Redemption out of nowhere, leading fans to speculate that a remaster or remake could be in the works. Do take the information with a grain of salt for the best results.
  • Now, however, another insider source has corroborated this news, saying that they’ve seen proof of Red Dead Remaster’s existence and that an announcement is coming imminently.

Red Dead Redemption is an iconic, mesmerizing tale set in the West and one of the most genre-defining ventures of Rockstar Games to date. As per the recent stunt of Korea’s Game Rating and Administration Committee that saw this legendary title receiving a new rating in 2023, fans have been expecting a remake or remaster of Red Dead Redemption. To their surprise, an insider source has confirmed that a remaster of the game is indeed real

Colin Moriarty—former IGN editor and owner of Last Stand Media—has evidently spilled the beans on whether the original Red Dead Redemption is being focused on or not. As per one of the episodes of Colin’s Sacred Symbols podcast, a remaster of the 2010-released masterpiece is coming and an official announcement could be arriving imminently. The podcast episode is locked behind a paywall and is only available to Colin’s Patreon subscribers.

I can say I have seen confirmation that this is real. I don’t think you need this confirmation, but I had someone reach out to me behind the scenes that showed me something that definitively shows this game is coming. Maybe even imminently with an announcement maybe in like August. So, not a huge surprise, you don’t need to tell you that South Korean ratings board doesn’t just rate things. They rate things that are submitted to them.”

It’s been a while since fans have been imploring Rockstar for a remaster or remake of the first Red Dead Redemption, given how it portrays the emotionally telling story of John Marston and the rest of the Van der Linde gang. While Red Dead Redemption 2 paints a much bigger picture of its in-game world, I think we can all agree that the initial title holds a special place in our hearts, and will continue to do so for the time to come.

Do you think RDR1 could use a remake/remaster? Why or why not?

Some fans, upon reading this news, are of the opinion that Rockstar should first prioritize releasing a current-gen version of the latest iteration in the Red Dead franchise. That’s because the game still runs with optimizations for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, irrespective of the current availability of Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 at the moment.

With that said, it’s already been highlighted in the past that Rockstar has decided to pull resources from Red Dead Redemption 2 for the purpose of focusing on GTA 6—quite possibly the magnum opus of the industry giant up until now. That is why we may not be seeing a next-gen patch for the third-person action-adventure sometime soon, but, still, don’t hold your breath!

Moreover, Rockstar has been absolutely lambasted with ridicule for how it dealt with the remasters of the OG Grand Theft Autos, namely the GTA Trilogy that comprises GTA III, GTA: San Andreas, and GTA: Vice City. The likes of Red Dead ending up that way would be a horrendous sight for players across the board, so let’s just hope at this point that things don’t turn out in this shape or form.
