The recent Gamescom event this year proved to be quite fruitful for Microsoft; it has divulged plenty of details related to Starfield and more. Phil Spencer has also actively participated in the event and confirmed quite a bountiful future awaiting the Xbox portfolio. The CEO appeared in an interview with IGN and doubled down on saying the company plans to release four first-party titles every single year.
Phil mentions that the devs have already shipped out more than the promised four first-party games this year, citing this year’s “Hi-Fi [Rush], Minecraft Legends, [and] Redfall.” He also says that the failure of Arkane Austin’s Redfall may cause players not to acknowledge the project at all, but plenty of other titles fill that four slot of first-party entries.
Maybe people don’t want to give us credit for Redfall, I get it, but I understand. Starfield, Forza, we just dropped Age [of Empires] 4 console last night. Awesome. I’m going to play that. And then going into next year, absolutely. We have talked about it as an aspiration, now we talk about it as our plan.”
Previously, the prospect for Phil Spencer and Xbox was just an aspiration, as the conglomerate has stated similar statements a few times in the past. However, Phil Spencer has turned that ambition to launch four first-party titles into a definite plan that will “absolutely” be carried by the Xbox team. Judging by the brimming roster of upcoming Microsoft exclusives, the PR words just might turn into results.

The Xbox team has also agreed not to pressure the devs during the Xbox Showcase 2023 by balancing out each project’s requirements with careful consideration. Xbox’s Joe Skrebels also iterated a similar statement to release four first-party games every year, mentioning it as an ambition.
Our ambition is to release at least four first-party games a year–although we’ll also balance that out with careful consideration for each project’s needs. That’s on top of the work our teams are doing to grow our existing communities that we’ve fostered over many years like The Elder Scrolls Online, Sea of Thieves, Minecraft, Forza, and so on,” spoke Joe Skrebels.
The tech goliath consists of over two dozen game studios under its umbrella that are filled to the brim with the capacity to create indelible experiences. We can anticipate Xbox to launch some hearty releases for the rest of the current generation.
Phil also discussed in the interview that the upcoming Forza Motorsport entry slated for release this year will be a live service with years of support. Unfortunately, the title launches with some flagship features missing that were initially planned. The CEO also noted the reasoning behind the Series S console in another interview during the Gamescom event 2023 and said that Xbox will not abandon the little giant moving forward in the current gen.
