Valve Tells Players To Stop Inhaling Steam Deck Vent Fumes

Steam Deck has stood out as one of the most powerful handhelds in recent times. It also apparently smells really good at the rear. Many owners of the handheld love to inhale the fumes that come out of its vent, enjoying the scent. It is no hidden secret, and many openly admit to the activity. As a result, it has become a popular meme among Steam Deck users. Now, Valve has stepped in to address the potential underlying risks from the fumes. 

Valve officially responded to the Redditor u/Metapod100 when he questioned about the potential health hazards of taking a sniff of the vent fumes regularly. He shared the statement iterated by Steam’s spokesperson on the official r/SteamDeck subreddit, clarifying that the activity carries no active health risks. The fumes themselves are not unsafe, but directly sniffing them is still not recommended.

As with all electronics, it is generally not recommended you inhale the exhaust fumes on your device. While there are no safety concerns with general usage, directly inhaling the device’s vent fumes should be avoided,” read the official response.

Valve understands that huffing the Steam Deck vent fumes has become somewhat of an inside joke and a meme among the fans. However, it has still advised players against sniffing it. Despite an oddly pleasant and seemingly harmless smell, it could eventually hurt the health of an addicted gamer. As a result, the Steam’s spokesperson also stated to “refrain from this behavior for the safety of your health.”

It is worth noting that no extended research has been done on the long-term effects of directly inhaling the fumes that come out of your Steam Deck vents. Perhaps that is why Valve intends to stop players from engaging in the activity for the sake of the meme or the scent itself.
