Nintendo Tops 2021 With Over 9 Million Video Game Sales In Japan

One of the best things about the gaming industry is how diverse it is. Publishers release games all year round and due to the huge demand, a lot of them make a profit. However, even in this very diverse environment, there are always a few companies that rule the land.

Nintendo is one of these big hitters, alongside Sony and Microsoft. The company has been around 1889 and originally made playing cards. Since Nintendo started selling video games, it has broken many records. From sales to critical acclaim, the company has everything. Recently, Nintendo has achieved another yearly milestone and added another feather to its cap.

Among publishers in 2021, Nintendo sold the most games in Japan with over 9 million units sold in the country. According to the Media Create Sales: CY 2021 on Install Base, sales of Nintendo games make up to 40% of the market share, which is an insanely high amount. Being responsible for nearly half of all video game sales in a country is a huge milestone.

Many publishers that are big in Japan have been beaten comfortably by Nintendo. Pokémon Company takes the second spot with 2 million units sold and makes 13% of the market sales. It’s a good performance but it falls dim in front of the numbers that Nintendo has produced.

CAPCOM takes the third spot, following Konami and BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment. However, the sales of all of these publishers combined still can’t match Nintendo. This just shows how dominant the company truly is. Ending this list, Microsoft takes a very fair #6 spot, considering its popularity in Japan.

On the other hand, SQUARE ENIX is at #7, while Sega is shockingly at the #10 spot, possibly because there have been no Sonic games since 2017 or the Yakuza franchise’s decline. In a much more surprising result, Sony doesn’t make the top 10 list, which is very unusual to see happen.

This list isn’t the only one that Nintendo has topped in the recent report. It also sold the most hardware with its famous Nintendo Switch, beating out the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X. With more than 5 million units sold, it was the highest-selling console in Japan. Hence, the company is ruling every front in Japan, be it video game or console sales.
