Assassin’s Creed Multiplayer ‘Invictus’ Being Developed By Rainbow Six Siege Devs

Assassin's Creed Invictus will feature past characters, developed by Siege and For Honour devs, may possibly be free-to-play

Assassin’s Creed Infinity has finally been properly revealed, to some extent, but you wouldn’t be called a being of lower intelligence than humans if you didn’t get any of it.

Ubisoft made quite a few announcements, and ever since, through various interviews, Assassin’s Creed Infinity Project Lead Marc-Alexis Côté has been clarifying details.

Assassin’s Creed Infinity is without a doubt very ambitious. It will now house many different kinds of Assassin’s Creed experiences, and will continuously evolve as we move on.

Its contents may include the meta (the modern-day story) sprawling RPGs like Codename Red modeled after the newer direction the series took on with Origins, and smaller, unique experiences such as Codename Hexe.

Now, there may be a multiplayer game too. Coté talked about ‘Invictus’ the multiplayer game in various interviews, and the Assassin’s Creed Twitter also tweeted this:

Readers may remember that the last time Assassin’s Creed had PvP multiplayer was in Black Flag, but now, we may get a completely new one soon.

Speaking to Eurogamer, when asked about future Assassin’s Creed titles led by female Assassins, he briefly mentioned Invictus.

“Yes, in the future, people can expect to see a female protagonist lead an Assassin’s Creed game. Whether that’s Red, whether that’s Hexe, whether that’s Invictus – well, that is a multiplayer game -“

During the presentation, he also said, “Codename Invictus is being designed to be a standalone game on the Infinity hub, alongside Codename Red and Codename Hexe,” Coté announced.” This clears any doubts and clarifies that Assassin’s Creed Invictus will be a standalone game that will be part of Infinity.

Moreover, he revealed who were the people working on Invictus. He said, “This effort is led by former senior members of successful Ubisoft multiplayer games, like For Honor and Rainbow Six Siege that will be joining with AC talents to leverage their know-how to design a new kind of multiplayer experience.”

Both Rainbow Six Siege and For Honour are remarkable multiplayer games. For Honour, in particular, would certainly contribute greatly towards Assassin’s Creed Invictus as both essentially feature combat against enemies with melee tools and weapons.

They also did not just randomly assign devs from said games to make the next Assassin’s Creed multiplayer game. Talking to Kotaku, Coté said:

The reasoning behind having a multiplayer initiative as well is I feel Assassin’s Creed can branch into different channels. We’ve only scratched the surface of what we can do with the Animus with Assassin’s Creed. We’ve had multiplayer in the past but that was not super accessible.

How can we expand upon that to have something that’s more approachable, more mass market and use this knowledge that we’ve had on games like For Honor and Rainbow Six to have a fun experience that leverages the franchise.”

As can be seen, it would seem that Coté and Ubisoft are certainly committed to bringing a solid experience to the players. Another interesting thing to notice is that Invictus may feature characters from previous Assassin’s Creed games.

Another thing to take note of is that it may even be a free-to-play game. When asked about it in an interview with IGN, Coté said, “We have not finalized our plans for the business model for Invictus, but it is a possibility [that it will be free-to-play].”

During the presentation of Invictus, Coté revealed a presentation slide for Invictus full of artwork showing past Assassin’s Creed protagonists, as well as enemies such as Odyssey’s minotaur.

When asked by Eurogamer Deputy Editor Tom Phillips about the past heroes whether this was a representative of the experience players might see, Coté said, “Yes, it is part of our creative intention to bridge the different Assassin’s Creed games together in a multiplayer experience. That’s in part inspired from what we’ve done in the past.”

In another interview with Tom Phillips, Coté was asked if there was any potential for Infinity to encompass other past games in some way. His response was, “There is the possibility for us to integrate our past games into Infinity as the abstraction, the idea is that you’re exploring memories. How we’re going to do that will be revealed at a later time.”

With all this said, expectations are certainly high for Assassin’s Creed Invictus but details are under a tight wrap currently, but we hope to hear more as time goes on and development proceeds.
