Wings are a game accessory that allows your character to fly by pressing and holding the jump button temporarily. Some Wings also will enable you to hover at fixed heights and accelerate your character while you ascend, which will give your character more maneuverability.

Best Wings In Terraria

Like any other accessory, Terraria has many different types of wings. Of course, some wings are better than others regarding their stats and rarity. The type of wings may vary depending on their rarity and origin. An important thing to note is that Wings are a Hard-Mode accessory. This means you can’t get a pair unless you have entered Hard Mode; apart from Fledgling Wings, the rest of the wings are Hard mode only.

As of today, the game has 47 wings, 45 of which are available on consoles, PCs, and Mobile platforms. However, 39 wings are available on Nintendo Switch and 21 on old-gen consoles.

Some Wings can be crafted, while others must be purchased. Most of the craftable wings can be made using the Hard-Mode anvil. Generally, each requires 20 Souls of Flight that are obtained from Wyverns and one key item that determines the wing type. One pair of wings was awarded by Angler.

The choice of wings can be different not only because of personal stat preferences but also due to game progression. The best obtainable wings in Early Hard mode are not the same as the wings in later stages of the game.

Tier-0: Early Wings (Lowest Stats After Fledgling Wings)

Once you enter hard mode, we advise you not to go for the early wings available in the game, like the Angel or Demon Wings. Since you will have to mine a lot, the reward will not be worth the hassle. Still, if you want to get a pair of wings, then get Leaf Wings as they are easy to obtain.

Leaf Wings

Wing Name Rarity Flight Time Height Flight Speed Bought/Crafted Amount For Buying/Materials For Crafting
Leaf Wings Pink 1.67 secs 53 Tiles -32 mph Horizontal Max

-150% Vertical Multiplier

Bought 75 Gold From Jungle Biome At Night

Though many wings become available once you enter Hard Mode, most of them will require Souls of flight to craft. This can be a little challenging since you must defeat the Wyvern (which is a hard mode enemy that spawns in the Sky) to collect Souls of Flight.

The good thing about leaf wings is that they can be easily bought from the Witch Doctor for 75 gold in the Jungle Biome at night. This makes them the Best Starting Wings since you don’t have to mine for them.

Tier-1: Best Early Wings (Improved Stats)

It is also a good decision if you skip the first Leaf Wings and directly go for better wings once you have some of the Hard Mode upgrades. Their Stats make them the best wings for Stages before Pre Mech-Bosses. Particularly there are three specific wings you can go for in this tier since they have better Flight times and Improved Height and Speed. The details are given in the below list.

Frozen Wings

Wing Name Rarity Flight Time Height Flight Speed Bought/Crafted Amount For Buying/Materials For Crafting
Frozen Wings Pink 2.17 secs 67 Tiles -34 mph Horizontal Max

-150% Vertical Multiplier

Crafted – 20 Souls Of Flights

– 1 Ice Feather

The Frozen Wings might just be the best Wings to start with. These can be crafted using 20 Souls of Flight and 1 Ice Feather, which can be obtained by defeating the Ice Golem in the Ice Biome. Compared to the next two wings on this list, these are easier to obtain since Ice Feathers have a 1/3 drop rate from Ice Golems. You find Ice Golems whenever it Rains/Snows in the Ice Biome.

Fairy Wings

Wing Name Rarity Flight Time Height Flight Speed Bought/Crafted Amount For Buying/Materials For Crafting
Fairy Wings Pink 2.17 secs 67 Tiles -34 mph Horizontal Max

-150% Vertical Multiplier

Crafted – 20 Souls Of Flights

– A 100 Pixie Dusts

As you can see, the stats on these wings are the same as the Frozen Wings, but the materials required to craft them are different. You will need 20 Souls of Flights and 100 Pixie Dust to Craft these wings. Compared to the Ice feather in the frozen Wings, the Pixie Dust can be hard to collect for some players.

So go for these wings if you are willing to collect Pixie Dust. One unique thing about these wings is that they can glow and emit light when you fly, which can sometimes be helpful.

Harpy Wings

Wing Name Rarity Flight Time Height Flight Speed Bought/Crafted Amount For Buying/Materials For Crafting
Harpy Wings Pink 2.17 secs 67 Tiles -34 mph Horizontal Max

-150% Vertical Multiplier

Crafted – 20 Souls Of Flight

– 1 Giatnt Harpy Feather

Though they have the same stats, we won’t recommend that you get these wings unless you already have the required components. The Harpy wings require 20 Souls of Flight and 1 Giant Harpy Feather to craft. The Giant Harpy Feather is dropped from Harpies with a 1/200 drop rate. So, unless you already have the Giant Harpy Feather, don’t go for these wings.

Tier-2 Wings (Post Mech Bosses)

Post-Mech boss fight
The Boss fight with Skeletron Prime

The main set of wings in this Tier is the Butterfly Wings which are not available unless you defeat at least one Mechanical Boss. We also have listed two alternatives (Bat Wings and Flame Wings) with the same stats as the Butterfly wings, but the restriction to defeat a mechanical boss does not apply to them.

However, the items that are required to craft them have lower drop rates, so you should not get them unless you already have the components or you are willing to mine them.

Butterly Wings

Wing Name Rarity Flight Time Height Flight Speed Bought/Crafted Amount For Buying/Materials For Crafting
Butterfly Wings Pink 2.67 secs 81 Tiles – 38 mph Horizontal Max

-150% Vertical Multiplier

Crafted – 20 Souls Of Flight

– Butterfly Dust

You need 20 Souls of Flight and Butterfly Dust to Craft these wings. The good thing is that the Butterfly dust has a 1/2 Drop rate from Moths in the Underground Jungle. So, this is a convenient option to get a new pair of wings with significantly better stats from Tier-1. But as we mentioned before, you must defeat at least one Mechanical Boss to get Butterfly dust drops from Moths.

Butterfly Wings also have a particle effect that emits Pink light like the Fairy Wings. In case if you haven’t defeated a mechanical boss and want better Wings, here are the two alternatives you can obtain that have the same stats as the Butterfly Wings.

Bat Wings

Wing Name Rarity Flight Time Height Flight Speed Bought/Crafted Amount For Buying/Materials For Crafting
Bat Wings Pink 2.67 secs 81 Tiles – 38 mph Horizontal Max

-150% Vertical Multiplier

Crafted – 20 Souls Of Flight

– 1 Broken Bat Wing

To get these Bat wings, you must have 20 Souls of Flight and 1 Broken Bat Wing. The downside of crafting these wings is that getting the Broken Bat Wing can be a bit difficult. Vampires drop the Broken Bat Wing during a solar eclipse. It has a 1/40 drop rate which is why you should go with the Butterfly Wings.

Flame Wings

Wing Name Rarity Flight Time Height Flight Speed Bought/Crafted Amount For Buying/Materials For Crafting
Flame Wings Pink 2.67 secs 81 Tiles – 38 mph Horizontal Max

-150% Vertical Multiplier

Crafted – 20 Souls Of Flight

– 1 Flame Feather

To craft Flame Wings, you must get 20 Souls of Light and 1 Flame Feather. Just like the Batwings, the downside to crafting these wings is getting the Flame Feather.

This is dropped by the Red Devil in the underworld. The drop rate on the Flame Feather is 1/75, which makes it quite tedious to get. Like the Fairy and Butterfly Wings, Flame Wings also has a particle effect that emits orange light in the dark and appears to be translucent.

Tier-3 (Post Plantera)

Best Wings in Terraria
The Plantera Boss Fight that unlocks Auto Hammer for the Hoverboard

The wings in this Tier will become available once you defeat Plantera. Specifically, the ingredients required to craft these wings can only be obtained after defeating Plantera. The details are given below.

Hoverboard

Wing Name Rarity Flight Time Height Flight Speed Bought/Crafted Amount For Buying/Materials For Crafting
Hoverboard Pink 2.83 secs 94 Tiles – 33 mph Horizontal Max

-160% Vertical Multiplier

Crafted – 20 Souls Of Flight

– 18 Shroomite Bars

The hoverboard is a wing-type accessory that greatly improves the last tier of wings. It is undoubtedly one of the best Wings in Terraria post-Plantera fight.

Even though the flight speed of the hoverboard is less than the previous tier of wings, it has a significant advantage over the last tier, which is the character’s ability to hover horizontally. You can hover in the air by holding the Down Button and Jump Button together. The two other benefits of a Hover Board are that your bonus speed is increased to 233% while hovering, and it is entirely silent.

You need 20 Souls of Flight and 18 Shroomite Bars to craft the hoverboard. Shroomite Bars are crafting materials that can be crafted on the Autohammer using Chlorophyte bars and Glowing Mushrooms. The Autohammer is only be purchased from Truffle once you defeat Plantera.

Chlorophyte bars can be crafted from Chlorophyte ore present in the Underground jungle, and Glowing mushrooms can be found on the Mushroom Grass in the Glowing Mushroom Biome.

Spectre Wings

Wing Name Rarity Flight Time Height Flight Speed Bought/Crafted Amount For Buying/Materials For Crafting
Spectre Wings Yellow 2.83 secs 94 Tiles – 38 mph Horizontal Max

-160% Vertical Multiplier

Crafted – 20 Souls Of Flight

– 10 Spectre Bars

Compared to the Hoverboard, the Specter wings require 20 Souls of Flight and 10 Spectre Bars to craft. Although they don’t have a hover effect, their ascending speed is significantly higher than all the wings that we have covered so far.

To craft the Spectre bars, you need Chlorophyte Bars and Ectoplasm. Ectoplasm is dropped from Dungeon Spirits in a Post-Plantera Dungeon.

Best Special Effects Wings In Terraria</h2>

This special wings class contains wings that have amazing flight stats with Special effects. All of them are Obtained after Defeating Bosses. The details are given below.

Empress Wings

Empress boss - Premoon lord
The Boss Fight with the Empress of Light to unlock Empress Wings
Wing Name Rarity Flight Time Height Flight Speed
Empress Wings Cayn 2.5 secs 128 Tiles – 41 mph Horizontal Max

-275% Vertical Multiplier

The first set of wings in the special effect wings are the Empress Wings which are dropped by the Empress of Light. Unlike the other wings in this category that drop on chance after boss fights, these wings will be dropped once you defeat the Empress.

Although the flight time on these wings is relatively low, their great Ascending Speed is their selling point. This makes them perfect for boss Fights like the Moon Lord and the Empress herself. When you equip the Empress wings, you use the UP Button to make faster Ascents. Keep in mind that the Empress Boss Fight is available only after Plantera, and it is pretty tough, so make sure you are well prepared.

Fishron Wings

Best Wings in Terraria
The boss fight with Duke Fishron unlocks Fishron Wings.
Wing Name Rarity Flight Time Height Flight Speed
Fishron Wings Yellow 3 secs 143 Tiles – 41 mph Horizontal Max

-250% Vertical Multiplier

Except for the vertical multiplier, these Wings exceed the Empress Wings by all means. Unlike the Empress of Light, the fight with Duke Fishron is available as soon as you enter Hard Mode. You can Summon him by fishing in the ocean using Truffle Worms. However, the fight with the Duke is not for the faint of heart.

Like the Empress Wings, the Fishron Wings are obtained once you defeat Duke Fashion.

The only downside to these Wings is that they have a low drop rate which is 1/15 from the Duke. So, you might have to farm the Duke to get your hands on these Wings. However, the reward is worth the hassle since you won’t feel the need to get better wings until once you are done with the Moon Lord fight.

Another bonus on the Fishron Wings is that the speed penalty for moving through the water is removed, and they also leave a water bubble trail.

Betsy’s Wings

Best - boss fight
The Boss Fight with Besty that Drops Besty Wings
Wing Name Rarity Flight Time Height Flight Speed
Betsy’s Wings Yellow 2.5 secs 119 Tiles – 36 mph Horizontal Max

-275% Vertical Multiplier

These are obtained when you defeat Betsy who is the last boss in the Old One’s Army. The main feature of these wigs is that they allow you to hover like a hoverboard. Unlike the hoverboard, the hover speed bonus on these wings is 300% which is quite impressive.

A big downside to getting these wings is their Drop rate which is 1/4  from Betsy. So, you must defeat the Old One’s Army repeatedly to farm these wings. Not only is this redundant but also quite challenging.

Best Wings Post-Moon Lord

Best Wings in Terraria
The Final Boss Fight in Terraria (Moon Lord)

At this point, you are pretty much done with the game after defeating the Moon Lord. So, you can head in any direction you like. Specifically, five wings are worth mentioning at this point. These have unmatched stats for all purposes with special bonuses.

They can mainly be divided into Hovering Focused Wings, Ascending Speed Focused Wings, and The Celestial Starboard.

For Hovering Purpose

The Hovering focused Wings include the Nebula Mantle and Vortex Booster. They have the same basic stats but different Crafting materials and Bonuses. Both give a 300% hovering Speed boost and 2x Duration when hovering. The stats are mentioned below:

Rarity Flight Time Height Flight Speed Bought/Crafted Amount For Buying/Materials For Crafting
Red 3 secs 143 Tiles – 33 mph Horizontal Max

-245% Vertical Multiplier

Crafted – 14 Nebula Fragments

– 10 Luminite Bars

To craft these, you need 14 Nebula Fragments (is one of the four lunar fragments dropped from the lunar pillar During Lunar Events) and 10 Luminite bars( Crafted from Luminite Dropped from the Moon Lord ) for the Nebula Mantle and 14 Vortex Fragments (again one of the four lunar fragments dropped from the Vortex pillar During Lunar Events) and 10 Luminite bars for Vortex Booster.

For Ascending Speed Purpose

These include the Solar wings and the Star Dust Wings. Both have a main focus on Ascending Speed. The base stats are the same for Solar Wings and Star Dust Wings as the last pair of wings.

Rarity Flight Time Height Flight Speed Bought/Crafted Amount For Buying/Materials For Crafting
Red 3 secs 167 Tiles – 46 mph Horizontal Max

-300% Vertical Multiplier

Crafted – 14 Solar Fragments

– 10 Luminite Bars

Both wings have a Particle Effect that allows them to emit light in the dark and 50% extra max ascent speed with faster acceleration.

To craft these wings you need 10 Luminite bars for both and 14 Solar Fragments (Is one of the four lunar fragments dropped from the Solar pillar During Lunar Events) and 14 StarDust Fragments (Which Is again one of the four lunar fragments dropped from the StarDust pillar During Lunar Events).

Best Wings (Expert Mode Only)

Celestial Starboard Wings Terraria
The Celestial Starboard unlocked after the Moon Lord fight in Expert Mode

We think only one pair of wings deserves to be mentioned in the top-tier wings category for the Expert Mode in the game.

Celestial Starboard

Now it is time to mention the best wing-type accessory in the game, which is undoubtedly the Celestial Starboard. The Moon Lord drops this in Expert Mode. With the combined Stats of the best Hovering Wings and The best Speed Wings, the flight stats are undoubtedly the best in the game. It has a slower ascent with quicker acceleration using the UP key and Horizontal Hovering.

Pre-Requisite Wing Name Rarity Flight Time Height Flight Speed
Defeat the Moon Lord In Expert Mode Celestial Starboard Rainbow 3 secs 201 Tiles – 41 mph Horizontal Max

-450% Vertical Multiplier
