The Tonberries were a long-awaited enemy type in Final Fantasy 16, and The Rising Tide DLC finally introduces them, including the Tonberry King, whose location can be found by following a simple side quest. It is definitely worth it to hunt down the King because it drops a rare crafting material that is required to make one of the strongest weapons in the game.
- The location of the Tonberry King is tied to the Reign of Pain side quest.
- This quest becomes available after completing the first batch of side quests in the Haven.
- Tonberry King can be easily defeated by using Leviathan’s powerful Eikonic abilities.
- Rare crafting materials are rewarded for beating the Tonberry King and completing the side quest.
Starting Reign Of Pain Side Quest
- How To Unlock: This side quest becomes available in the Haven after you have completed the first batch of side quests available in the area, of which there are around 8.
- Quest Objective: Fanet will be given the task of beating the Tonberry King in order to lift the curse that has made Talor ill. This quest essentially continues the What Ails You side quest.
Finding The Tonberry King
- Location: The Tonberry King is located near the Cloaktop inside a cave, and the specific location is also shown in the image above.
- Finding The Path: You will have to travel from Haven to the exact location of the Tonberry King, and on your way, you will also have to fight the smaller Tonberries: however, I just used Ambrosia to run through them.
Fighting The Tonberry King
- Strategy: Tonberry King was not difficult to beat, even on the Final Fantasy difficulty, since I was easily staggering it from range by using Leviathan’s powerful Eikonic abilities. I recommend using Leviathan to stagger it from range and then go all in with abilities that eat away the health bar.
- Dealing With Summons: The King will also summon smaller Tonberries mid-fight, and I had abilities like Leviathan’s Tsunami or Odin’s Zantetsukan ready to deal with ganks quickly.
- Reward For Beating The King: Flawless Tang is obtained in Final Fantasy Mode, and Notched Tang is obtained in Normal mode, which is required to craft the Tonberry Knife.
Reign Of Pain Completion Rewards
After beating the Tonberry King, you can talk to Fanet in the Haven one last time to complete the Reign of Pain side quest. Completing the quest rewards you with another rare crafting material, the Orichalcum, which can be used to make powerful weapons and armor.
This concludes my guide on the location of the Tonberry King in The Rising Tide DLC of Final Fantasy 16. I have not only included the exact location of the King but have also mentioned a complete walkthrough of the side quest that is tied with it.
