Bungie’s Marathon Could Feature Third-Person Combat Like Destiny 2, Hints Job Listing

The gameplay could be more similar than we think.

Story Highlights

  • Bungie’s upcoming extraction FPS Marathon may feature Destiny 2’s dynamic combat system.
  • We may see a blend of third-person and first-person mechanics, as hinted in a new job ad.
  • The devs have not yet affirmed the details so far. It is best to take the info with a grain of salt.

The upcoming extraction FPS shooter by Bungie—dubbed Marathon—could feature dynamic combat like Destiny 2. Initially spotted by The Game Post, the ex-Halo studio is currently hiring for a Senior Sandbox Animator for the game. It wants the employee to work on first and third-person animations. The team likely wants to add a Destiny 2-like seamless transition system for a smooth experience.

As a Senior 1st Person Animator, you will be involved in all aspects of production, from the initial concept of player motion to technical considerations of implementation, to collaboration with other art and design teams on the look and feel of our 1st and 3rd person combat,” mentions the ad.

Bungie requires the animator to create “1st person and 3rd person content.” Similar remarks are mentioned in the rest of the report. Like the norm, the listing does not divulge more enticing details for Marathon. However, it suggests the combat could be eerily similar to Destiny 2. The tidbit has caused concerns among the excited community.

Marathon Features No Single-Player Elements At All

The mysteries surrounding the PvP extraction shooter are palpable. However, we know that it has no campaign and will solely focus on a multiplayer experience. It is a major point of contention for the entry. Regardless, the title is expected to launch next year for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5, with cross-play included.

All in all, Marathon appears to be in critical stages of development. As such, much of what we read is prone to change in the final release, and the devs have not yet confirmed these details anyway. So, it’s best to take this listing with a pinch of salt.
