Cyberpunk 2077 Amasses More Concurrent Steam Players Than Starfield After Update 2.0

CD Projekt Red brings its RPG back from the depths of post-launch hell.

Story Highlights

  • Cyberpunk 2077 is a 2020-released game that initially came out for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. It’s an IP that did not enjoy an ideal start, but ever since then, developer CD Projekt Red has tweaked the RPG extensively in an attempt to align it with the studio’s original vision.
  • In doing so, the first-person shooter is now doing better than ever, especially following Update 2.0 which seemingly overhauls multiple portions of the game significantly. Moreover, the title’s new DLC expansion Phantom Liberty is scheduled to come out today.
  • Factoring all that into account, Cyberpunk 2077’s concurrent player count on Steam rests at 245,000 users, which is considerably more than Starfield’s CCU count of 84,000 these days.

Cyberpunk 2077 continues to make the news these days, and thankfully, not for the same reasons it did back in fall 2020 when it launched across the spectrum. Owing its resurgence to constant tweaks, changes, and adjustments from the side of CD Projekt Red, the first-person shooter is actually more than just playable now, and the numbers on SteamDB are simple proof of that statement.

At the moment, CDPR’s on-the-rise RPG is sporting about 245,420 players all playing at the same time on Steam. Coincidentally, this also happens to be the 24-hour peak in player count that the title has managed to amass. The trends show a steep increase in the number of active users, and it appears that with each passing day, the figures continue to rise. Not bad for a two-year-old single-player game.

On the other hand, we’ve got a glaring contestant in the mix here, and it’s none other than Bethesda’s 25-years-in-the-making space RPG, although don’t take that development time too literally. Starfield released globally on September 6 to rave reviews, even boasting a 10-million player count two weeks into its launch. Now, however, the story is a little different, as the title struggles to maintain 100,000 CCUs on Steam

There’s no doubt that Starfield gets a lot of things right in the grand scheme of things, but in areas of significant importance, such as depth in exploration, a smooth and seamless UI, and a main questline that’s reasonably gripping, the RPG seems to misfire. Oh, and by the way, we talk about all these things in our dedicated Starfield review, so do check that out if you’re after more critique.

To talk about Cyberpunk 2077, on the other hand, well, we all know how the game was an unmitigated disaster at launch, cutting down fans’ anticipations so bad, it actually plummeted CD Projekt Red’s stock price. Fast-forward to 2023, the RPG is in better shape than ever, thanks to the consistent efforts of the Polish studio in question.

What’s more, is that things have taken yet another upward thrust following the launch of Update 2.0 for Cyberpunk 2077. This drastic new overhaul of the first-person shooter has brought considerable changes to the gameplay, perks, weapons, and the much-desired police system in Night City, offering a town that’s more enhanced than ever to wreak havoc in.

The cherry on top here is the release of the Phantom Liberty DLC, which is evidently the one and only expansion that Cyberpunk 2077 will be receiving. The reason for this was explained earlier, with CD Projekt Red’s SVP of business development Michał Nowakowski saying,

The decision has already been made – as we’ve announced, we’re not going to make a 2nd or 3rd expansion; this is the only expansion for the game; it has nothing to do with how satisfied we are with sales; rather, it’s a technical decision.”

Cyberpunk 2077 was released on December 10, 2020, for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The RPG was later ported to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in an upgraded format, and today, on September 26, Cyberpunk’s first and final expansion Phantom Liberty has been released for all the platforms the game is on.
