Rumor: Elder Scrolls VI Subtitle May Be “Sentinel” Following Xbox CEO’s Asterisk Tease

Bethesda may have accidentally, or very deliberately, offered another clue about The Elder Scrolls VI. On August 11, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma visited Bethesda’s Rockville, Maryland headquarters and afterward posted on X that she’d watched a “live playthrough” of the game that morning.

“The scale and grandeur are incredible. The story is even greater,” she wrote, referring to the game throughout as “The Elder Scrolls VI: ********”. Bethesda Game Studios replied using the same eight-asterisk censor, thanking Sharma for the visit.

Nothing has been officially announced, but that has never stopped Elder Scrolls fans from examining every available character. Since Sharma’s post used exactly eight asterisks, and Bethesda echoed the same count in its reply, fans quickly assumed the subtitle is an eight-letter word and started working through candidates.

Fans Believe The Hidden Word Is “Sentinel”

Once Sharma’s tweet went up, users across Elder Scrolls communities quickly landed on “Sentinel,” an eight-letter word that also happens to be the capital city of Hammerfell, the desert province long rumored to be The Elder Scrolls VI’s setting based on the landscape shown in Bethesda’s original 2018 teaser. It had already circulated as a rumored subtitle before this tweet, which is part of why it became the immediate front-runner.

The theory then picked up two more pieces of supporting evidence, both credited to digging by the Elder Scrolls community. First, Michael Kirkbride, a writer and designer who worked at Bethesda during the Morrowind era, replied to a comment guessing “Sentinel” with what fans are treating as a one-word confirmation.

He hasn’t worked at the studio in decades, so his information may not be current or reliable, but since the whole tease appears to be a deliberate hype push from Microsoft and Bethesda, it’s possible he does have some inside knowledge, or was simply asked to respond.

Second, and described as the more significant piece, fans traced a numeric employee code, “190514-2009140512,” that has appeared on Starfield’s character creation screen since launch. Split into pairs and mapped to the alphabet, the sequence spells out S-E-N-T-I-N-E-L, a code simple enough that the odds of it being accidental are considered very low by those who found it.

A follow-up comment in the Elder Scrolls community adds that the code was reportedly changed between Starfield’s first reveal and its later showings, which would suggest the detail was deliberate rather than a coincidence that just happened to line up. Credit for originally spotting the code goes back even further, to a post from over two years ago that flagged the same employee number well before this week’s tease made it relevant again.

None of that makes the theory airtight. Sharma’s asterisk count could still be a stylistic choice unrelated to letter count, and Kirkbride’s reply, however suggestive, isn’t an official confirmation from Bethesda.

Another Clue Pointing Toward Hammerfell

If accurate, “Sentinel” would fit neatly with Bethesda’s tendency to name mainline entries after specific locations, following Morrowind and Skyrim, while giving Hammerfell speculation its strongest evidence yet. Sentinel itself carries real narrative weight in Elder Scrolls lore as a historically significant Redguard city built by the more outward-facing Forebear faction, one of two rival Redguard political traditions that have shaped Hammerfell’s history.

Still, believable isn’t the same as confirmed. Bethesda has revealed very little about The Elder Scrolls VI since its 2018 announcement, and neither the studio nor Xbox has verified a subtitle, a setting, or even the idea that the asterisks correspond to letters at all. This tease may be the community’s best clue in years, or simply another cryptic social post sending fans down a familiar rabbit hole.
