Two Months Into Release, PlayStation’s Latest Shooter Is Now On The Brink Of Collapse

The majority of the party shooter's player base has dropped.

Story Highlights

  • Foamstars is a recently released “party shooter” for the PS5 and PS4 consoles, developed by Square Enix.
  • The game has suffered a tremendous loss in its player count, and this comes only two months after releasing.
  • Foamstars has failed to impress fans due to its lackluster gameplay, often getting compared to Splatoon.

Well, that didn’t take too long. Foamstars was announced about 10 months ago, receiving lukewarm attention from the side of fans, with many calling it a “Splatoon clone” on the spot as well, though the producer of the game didn’t like that very much.

Now, however, we’ve got information stating that the game is on the verge of disaster, losing about 95% of its player base over the course of its release. This claim is made by TrueTrophies, who have put forth the stats as per their partnership with reputable tracker website Game Insights.

If anything, this is nowhere near good news, especially for Square Enix, the publisher. The PlayStation exclusive has failed to miss the mark for the suits up high, even though it launched as a free-to-redeem game on PlayStation Plus for members of the subscription service. Now, however, it costs $29.99 on the PlayStation Store.

Why Did Things Go So Bad With Foamstars?

I was among those who grabbed Foamstars for free when it launched, and while I can’t speak for others explicitly, I found the party shooter highly uninteresting. The cutscenes and the tutorial ran long and tedious, followed by unusually long matchmaking times.

Combine that with gameplay that seems to have much going on at a single given time, and you’ve got one player whose interest has dropped hard and fast.

Despite Bad Stats, Foamstars Will Get New Content

The time is nigh for new seasonal Foamstars content. The devs just kicked off “Mysterious Swing” for the party shooter, bringing new content to the table in the name of a brand-new playable character, additional skins, and more.

Thankfully though, this isn’t the only live service shooter that has come out for the PlayStation in recent times. Arrowhead Game Studio’s latest venture, Helldivers 2, in the third-person shooter space has turned out to be incredibly fun, garnering praise from across the world for the developer’s zero focus on microtransactions yet unwavering emphasis on player playability.

Other Content to Check Out:

Foamstars came out on February 6, 2024, for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 as an exclusive title, developed by Toylogic.
