Helldivers 2’s Release May Have Been Delayed, CES Trailer Shows

The game was announced during last year's PlayStation Showcase.

Story Highlights

  • Helldivers is a highly anticipated upcoming third-person shooter by Arrowhead Game Studios.
  • The game received a new trailer at State of Play 2023, where a concrete release date was given out.
  • As per PlayStation’s presentation at CES 2024, the release of Helldivers 2 could’ve been delayed.

Helldivers 2 — the sequel to the well-acclaimed Helldivers from 2015 — is expected to arrive early in February, and that’s according to the game’s lengthy gameplay trailer from last year’s State of Play. Now, however, it seems that the third-person shooter might’ve been delayed internally by a margin of almost three weeks, as per the title’s showcase during PlayStation’s presentation at CES 2024.

For those not in the know, Helldivers 2’s original release date is slated to be February 8, 2024 and this still holds up until now. This was confirmed back in September when PlayStation showed off the title’s Bile Titan boss fight gameplay, finishing the footage with an official announcement of the shooter’s landing day, while also providing an update on the game’s pre-orders, which are now ready to go.

Honestly, at this point, I believe this is nothing more than a typo from PlayStation’s side, where the person responsible for editing the video could have gotten the dates mixed up. That said, I could be very wrong and a delay is, indeed, coming. We’ll know for sure what’s up in a matter of days, though it’s worth mentioning that PlayStation UK posted the following on its official X account, which is exactly 30 days away from February 8—Helldiver’s 2 release date.

Helldivers 2 is priced at $39.99 on the PlayStation Store, despite looking like a flat-out AAA title. It’s one of those games that you are likely to see coming to PS Plus—PlayStation’s subscription service that grants access to online play, a vibrant catalog of titles, and other benefits—probably within a year of release, but hey, don’t quote me on that.

The title looks incredibly fun with its whole humans-saving-the-world-against-aliens narrative and is distinct from other multiplayer shooters in that its friendly-fire feature is set to “always on” by default. This makes for quite interesting match-ups, where you actually have to be wary of your surroundings to a greater extent as compared to other competitive shooters.

Helldivers 2 was announced back at the PlayStation Showcase in May 2023 but has been under the works since at least 2020 back when Arrowhead announced that it’s started work on a next-gen, third-person co-op shooter for the PlayStation 5. The game’s also coming to PC, though, and has been up on Steam for a while now as well.
