PlayStation Plus Users Got Games Worth Over $10,000 In 2023

According to stats reported by Sony Prophet, PlayStation Plus added new games worth a whopping $10,500 across in 2023. Across all its tiers, the subscription service received more than 221 games in the new PS Plus model’s first full year.

Furthermore, the Sony service also edged out Xbox Game Pass in this statistic, with the Microsoft subscription adding games worth $9,000 in 2023, over $1,000 less than PlayStation Plus. The subscription also currently has more subscribers than Game Pass which stands at 30 million compared to the 47.4 million PS Plus has racked up. However, the price difference between the two does play a part as the more expensive Extra/Premium of PS Plus only has half the subscribers of Game Pass.
Just recently, the Info leaked in the Insomniac Games hack revealed that adding titles to PlayStation Plus did cannibalize overall sales. Games like Horizon: Zero Dawn, Horizon: Forbidden West, and God of War, all fell down a cliff in sales when they hit the Sony subscription. Microsoft also confirmed this effect during the Microsoft-Activision merger, meaning it’s not all sunshine and roses for these services.
Last year, Sony introduced a new model of PlayStation Plus and discarded the sole $60 subscription to help it compete with Xbox Game Pass. Divided into three tiers, this new system added the Extra and Premium PS Plus tiers on top of the already existing Essential one.
Costing $99.99 per year at the start, the Extra tier added a catalog of over 400 PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games in addition to the free titles and online play you get in the essential subscription. PlayStation Plus Premium took it one step further and added cloud streaming for PS3 games alongside classic PlayStation, PS2, and PSP titles for either download or streaming.
Since then, Sony has upped the cost of the Extra tier to $134.99, Essential to $79.99, and Premium to $159.99 from $120 with Game Pass also increasing subscription prices in the same time frame.
