The Lord of the Rings: Gollum Devs Are Already Working On Another LOTR Title

The recent flop has not hindered the team's spirit from working on another The Lord of the Rings game.

Story Highlights

  • The Lord of the Rings: Gollum devs are reportedly brewing the next LOTR entry, as spotted in a database of games receiving a subsidy from the German government.
  • The project is currently codenamed “It’s Magic,” and it will take players “into a lush world full of mythical beings and spells.” It is targeted at fantasy and 3D-action-adventure genre lovers.
  • It may have started developing in 2022, and its release date is listed to be August 31, 2024. The German government has awarded 2.03 million euros as a subsidy.
  • Daedalic Entertainment can apply a subsidy of up to 40% of the projected development cost, as per the rules.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum’s launch surprised many unsuspecting folks right after the PlayStation Showcase 2023 event, gaining notoriety for all the wrong reasons. The title proved to be a generic and bug-ridden depiction of the excellently crafted universe, leading many to dislike the $70 price tag and the insane high system requirements. Regardless, Daedalic Entertainment is seemingly already brewing another LOTR title.

As initially discovered by the German site GamesWirthschaft, the studio has enrolled another The Lord of the Rings entry in the database of video game projects receiving a subsidy from the German government. It is currently codenamed “It’s Magic” on the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action site—the article has since been removed. The title will adopt an official name as the development progresses.

Daedalic is working on a new project that will take the player into a lush world full of mythical beings and spells. It tells a story from the perspective of a character that has never been told before,” lists the site.

Some details about gameplay are also stated in a synopsis, and a few specifics about the genre have been listed. As per the site, the player will discover new regions, implying that it could be an open-world venture in some way. Moreover, the user will impact “the events of the world within the scope of his role and abilities. In his own way, he is trying to influence the course of events and change the fate of the world.”

The project is reportedly aimed at fantasy and 3D-action-adventure genre lovers, meaning it may feature combat as well. While it is not explicitly stated in the description of the game that it is another entry into The Lord of the Rings series, the image used with the logo of Daedalic Entertainment does feature the franchise name.

To add even more flair, the project release date is already listed on the site, with it coming out on August 31, 2024. Nonetheless, it is likely a placeholder date that may be moved ahead as the development advances. Moreover, the development may have started in June of 2022, as per the listed date, which would coincide with the Lord of the Rings: Gollum.

The subsidy awarded by the German government is a staggering 2.03 million euros. Additionally, the rules in the deal will let The Lord of the Rings: Gollum devs apply a subsidy of up to 40% of the projected development cost. The prospect of a new LOTR title is surprising, considering LOTR: Gollum’s horrendous ratings after launch, effectively becoming the worst-rated entry of 2023 thus far.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum follows the perplexing Gollum on his perilous voyage to retrieve his “precious;” the players will learn to outwit the mighty creatures of Middle-earth. It is an action-adventure game and an epic adventure riddled with a slew of bugs and average visuals. It was released on May 25, for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, with a Switch release planned for later this year.

The Lord of the Rings IP reportedly has many other titles in development, planned to release by 2024. While the details about the new The Lord of the Rings game by Daedalic Entertainment are shrouded in mystery, we can expect to hear official announcements in the future.
