Resident Evil 2 Is The Highest-Selling Game In The Franchise, Over 12 Million Units Sold

Capcom‘s remake of Resident Evil 2 is now the highest-selling entry in the legendary survival & action horror franchise, having sold 12.6 million units since launch. The company revealed these updated metrics in its Platinum Titles list, placing RE2 at the third spot with Monster Hunter: World and Monster Hunter Rise taking the first & second spots respectively.

Resident Evil 2 was initially launched in 1998 to critical acclaim despite some criticism. Said criticism was commonly directed at the inventory system. Fast forward to 2019, Capcom released the remake of RE2, setting a standard for what video game remakes should embody. The company’s proprietary RE Engine has also contributed significantly to the success of its recent games, including the second entry’s remake.

The series has regained its former glory in recent years. It began with Resident Evil 7 and continued with Resident Evil 2 and the other latest entries. Each title has sold several million copies. In fact, RE7 has sold 12.4 million units since its launch. Resident Evil Village is at 8,3 million units, just slightly lower than RE5 and RE6. In addition, the Resident Evil 3 remake has achieved a total of 7.6 million units in sales.

Moreover, Resident Evil 4 managed to live up to the original’s legacy as well. Having released earlier this year, the game sold over five million units. With rumors of DLC flying around, it can be assumed that RE4 will see an increase in this number once Capcom makes some form of official announcement. 

Resident Evil 2 is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, and PC.
