Yuri Lowenthal Confirms Helldivers 2 Role; Says Performance Inspired By Starship Troopers

Helldivers 2 has been making waves across the industry ever since it came out, and quite honestly, I didn’t see it coming the way it really did. Now, it employs in-game voice lines from talent across the world, but one, in particular, stands out significantly more than others. Those familiar recognized Yuri Lowenthal’s voiceover instantly when they started playing the game, and it turns out, they stood correct. 

The man came forward in recent times, confirming his role in Arrowhead Game Studio’s latest venture, while also citing Starship Troopers as the inspiration for his performance. For those not in the know, Starship Troopers is a cult classic, based on the titular novel by American science fiction author Robert Anson Heinlein.

Helldivers 2 is a pretty fun game, and what makes it even more entertaining — especially when played with a group of friends — is the level of humor involved. The title shares a ton of similarities with Starship Troopers in terms of comedic satire and the overall human military vs alien bugs theme. To give you a little insight into the background of Yuri, he’s one of the most well-known voice actors around, known for voicing the likes of Peter Parker in Insomniac’s Spider-Man franchise, the protagonist of Persona 3, and more. Also, you’ve got the Diablo, Dead or Alive, Final Fantasy, Saints Row: The Third, and Genshin Impact IPs right in Yuri’s catalog as well, having participated in over 200 video games.

As for Helldivers 2, the third-person shooter came out on February 8, 2024, for the PlayStation 5 and PC, following its initial announcement during last year’s PlayStation Showcase. As per Arrowhead’s CEO, the title took about 8 years to make and has currently sold about a million copies less than a week into its release.
